I have an 8 year old moggie- had him since 6m or so - today was out first need for vets treatment and at £175 it was a lot less than we would have paid for 8 years of cover. Hubby is on about getting him insured now he's getting older but I'm not convinced we need it

This topic is really relevant to me as I was thinking of cancelling my cat insurance.
My cat is 4, male, and an indoor cat. Had a bit of a bad start in life thanks to his previous owners but is now doing well.
Recently though, he's had a few bouts of cystitis (sp?) and apparently now needs to be on a special diet for life. As my excess is £70, none of the vet bills or tablets he's got come anywhere near that, and surprise surprise the food he's on isn't covered.
I'm actually wondering what is the point of the pet insurance right now, since I can't flipping claim anything on it anyway :o

  • I always would!! Today I noticed my cat limping slightly so it was straight down the vets! Many hours of sedation, Xrays and splinting later shes now home.
I'm so glad I have it as it means I do not have to worry one bit about costs - do another x-ray to double check - go for it, check up every week for the next 6 weeks and possibly still an operation at the end of it - again no worries - no financial worries at least! I had considered cancelling insurance as she is only 3 but has a pre-existing medical conditions (small kidneys) when I adopted it which means they can wiggle out of just about anything medical wise, but not trauma!
I'm just happy to know I can make sure she has the very best care without having to worry or even think about it, esp as the bill is already into many hundreds this time and its only day 1!

    Sorry about your cat....

I think you are not making your calculations right though - you will only pay the excess once per condition (not at every visit if for the same condition) and any further treatment/medication will be covered by insurance so to me in your cse it makes sense to keep it.
  • Don't cancel it! I pay about £20pm and that covers our two cats. Lucy the youngest has never had to go to the vets, but Eddie the oldest has cost around £1,500 in vets bills in the last six months. Thankfully we were insured and so only had to pay excess of about £140(£70 for two different things). This insurance basically saved our cat's life as I don't know how we could have covered the costs otherwise.

If you aren't happy with the amount you are paying then I would shop about, but I wouldn't go without, you can almost guarantee that as soon as you cancel it, you will need it! I know friends who have had this happen to and it's cost them a fortune!

I have already insured all 4 kitties with Argos and moved Zara there too....not cancelling.

But interesting discussion going on here :)
  • ARGOS!? ha ha! This multitasking all the companies do these days confuses the hell out of me! I'm a simple soul that can't cope with credit cards from tesco or lightbulbs from thortons (I may have made that one up :P)

Glad you stuck with the insurance! ^_^

Yup - Argos, amost the same cover as M&S or PetPlan but half the price.....

Had Zara and old cat Tiger with M&S for years, the premium went through the roof on reneval, moved to PetPlan (Zara and 2 first kitties) but was still way too expensive - someone here mentioned Argos, chcked them out and BINGO ;)

All 5 (4 cats and a dog) insured for the same price that would have been paying just for Zara with M&S or PetPlan...

Do you mind me asking what they quoted you for your shepherd? I ran a quote for both my rott and my staff and for the same level of cover I am getting with M&S I was quoted £35 each a month for them.

My staff has just gone up with M&S from £21 to £25 a month despite no claims this year and I am dreading what my rott will be next year, despite no claims.

No probs, for the first year I was paying £32 per month, when the reneval came they were asking for £58.

The only claim I have made for Zara was for £250 operaton she had to remove a growth from her elbow (nothign serious or long term)

With Argos, it is now about £65 for Zara AND all for kittens.....

    Hope this helps
