pc playing some mp4 movies, but not others?

older ones i have seem fine, but a few clips i got recently are not working..?
have XP and IE8 (i think!).. also the latest version of vlc player which ran everything (mp4, wmv, flv, avi), until now..?:question:

Its usually the codec not on the machine . Not playing in these circumstances sounds like non standard format as VLC plays near enough all standard formats .
Google for GSpot that will tell you format and codec .

have reloaded vlc player, same result.. windows media 11 already on, too..
one video gave this error code- C00D119A
it all seems rather random, as to what file plays, or not..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
