Credit card purchase protection

Options
At the beginning of September I bought a new laptop using part Clubcard vouchers (yes, I know I should have used them on deals) and part Santander Zero credit card.

Like an idiot i've managed to drop the laptop, which has wrecked the screen plus ??? other damage (doesn't even boot up).

Someone told me that, if there's no other insurance on that product (I don't have accidental damage cover at home) I can claim off my credit card.

Is there an article on here how to do that? Or a link? Anyone?

The credit card insurance or trying to get your money back will not work as there is nothing wrong with the laptop or the supplier but you dropped it, it was unfortunately your own fault.....you'll have to bite the bullet this time...

    They are wrong.

If something happened that was the vendors liability e.g. it was faulty then the credit card company are jointly liable.
So if for example it was faulty and the vendor went out of business or refused to help then you can go to the credit card company.

However if you dropped it then neither the vendor or the credit card company are liable. You are liable for damage that you have done.

Some credit card companies do offer free insurance, so you could check the credit card benefits. But this would be a voluntary benefit rather than your statutory right.
I remember a TV advert with Rowam Atkinson for Barclaycard carrying a carpet that was on fire.

So your next step if to check any free card benefits to see if your purchases are covered (sometimes for 90 days).

I cannot see anything of this nature currently advertised on the Zero card, but sometimes they change the offerings, so the latest info won't necessarily aplpy to your card.
You will need to check the info they sent you or call them.

I have not seen extended purchase protection on credit cards for donkey years...Barclaycard use to do it in the 90' and Amex as well....

Egg do it and Amex platinum cashback do it as well, so deosn't look like it's been phased out totally.

I don't think it's on teh zero card, but for the sake of a laptop, I'd check properly with a phonecall.

It says in post #1 that they don't have accidental damage cover at home.
  • Looks like if i'd bought it using my 34.9% Capital One card it would have been covered, but can find no mention of purchase protection on Santander. Trouble is, if I call them and tell them I want to claim for a laptop, they'll say "you don't have cover" even if I do.

Yep sorry, I meant just calling to check if here was any purchase protection on the card not to make a claim if you know it's not covered.

Sometimes they change the benefits on cards over the years, so if you took one out 2 or 3 years ago, then you might not be able to see if it's covered without phoning (unless you have the paperwork). The info on the website applies for cards you apply for now, so it's not easy to find out benefits for OLD versions of a card.
But if you know it's not covered then there is no point phoning.
