Carpet Fitting on Stairs - how to? And costs?

Hi,

Please would anyone be able to tell us how carpet should be properly and safely fitted to stairs?

We hadn't really given it a thought but are getting carpet quotes and one fitter said something about laying it in one piece and this being the correct thing to do and that some fitters were lazy and did it the wrong way.

We have no idea what is correct/safe. Pls can anyone say what is correct and where the gripper rods should be placed on each stair etc - just so we (seem to) know what we're talking about for the next round of quotes...

Also have had some very high quotes, what charges should we expect? Can we save any money by installing gripper rods ourselves - how difficult is this? We have our own rods and underlay.

Many thx.

Gripper rods go at the back where the next step is.
Just had my own and my mothers fitted for about £60 + carpet.
Mine was cheaper as we had underlay and some grippers in place hers needed the lot but for £285 all in it didnt seem a bad price.

I've only ever known stair carpet to be laid in pieces. they join it on the intersection between the tread and the riser so that it doesn't show. Mine where done like this 15 years ago and have never moved.
