Is this really unreasonable?

7 miles to get to work = scooter....0

Methyr Tydfil, Rochdale and the like only exist because people flocked there looking for work in Victorian times. Before then there was nothing but hills and a few scattered farms.
Now there is no work in these places, why are the current generation so reluctant to up sticks themselves?
lol - as someone who left Rochdale aged 19 and has no intention of living there again, I should agree with you. But there are plenty of jobs in Rochdale! With a 20 minute commute into Manchester vs an hour into Cardiff from Merthyr its hardly an equitable comparison.0 -

I was up there (Rochdale) just a while back getting a new car battery fitted for £36. Came via the motorway and nothing much seems to have changed apart from those wind power turbines you can see on the moors.
Took the number 17 bus from Manchester to Rochdale many many many times...when I was 9 and 10 years old (by myself.. having first taken a train from South Manchester I might add) then walk over from Piccadilly train station to the Piccadilly Gardens bus terminal to get on the 17 bus. All before we sold the Rochdale house... although our next home (Darwen Lanchashire) was even a longer commute to and from school for the next year, before finally relocating closer to school. Sometimes the train to Rochdale from Victoria station. Rochdale and Darwen... definately not areas I'd want to return to live.0 -

Is it really unreasonable to ask people to relocate for work if they can't find something local?
I'm not so sure.
There are 40,000 working age people in Merthyr and only 400 jobs available in Cardiff.
Not that bright an idea, it seems.

But I’m not suggesting that therefore it’s ok for rubbish people who refuse to be bog cleaners to go on the dole and sponge off taxpayers, on the contrary that is wholly unacceptable. So my over all point is that the whole system is a total mess from top to bottom in many ways and we have an acute lack of intelligence in the leadership, as is exhibited all the time, and as is demonstrably evident in this appallingly stupid pronouncement which is wrong in so many ways and on so many levels.
Firstly, thanks for an extensive, well written and considered post.
I think what I missed in your original post, was that your criticism was aimed at what he said (and how he said it). I had mistaken it for defending people for choosing unemployment and benefits over work.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Not in my experience (although perhaps my anecdotal evidence is not representative).
My partner has two relatives who have been unemployed for quite some time. Both of them were required to fill in something showing three or more things that they had done to look for work in the last two weeks. One who is resigned to staying unemployed puts "checking the job pages of the local paper" twice and "checking Jobs at the Job Centre". He doesn't actually look for work. That's been enough to get him through 2 years so far.
My 3 months claiming JSA last year could be summed up by my first visit: "Oh, we don't really get the sort of jobs you'd be interested in". I was then left alone to job search, and show them a short summary every fortnight while I got on with finding something for myself. I then got told off because (after repeatedly telling them) I couldn't attend because I would be at work, I didn't turn up one week...Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. I know I found that I was travelling 20 miles along the M4 just for temp jobs - and when I passed the Brook agency window before it got really bad they had just 2 jobs in the window, when I spoke to them she said "Yeah, not got much in at the moment - that's all we have"0 -
One of the problems about these mythical jobs somewhere else is - where are they? And, if you find them, how many times can you really travel 200 miles each way, at your own cost, to always come 2nd?
And, the bugg4hs want 2nd interviews, so more travelling at your own cost to attend that, before coming 2nd (usually to somebody local as they think you either won't move, or will get homesick quickly and leave).
There are lots of job adverts, that's true, but also a lot of stories of non-existant jobs... and others of 500-1000 applicants. Then there's the "never hear a dicky bird".
I've had 10 interviews, travelling substantial distances and making a lot of effort, to always come 2nd. And coming 2nd for all the wrong reasons, not because they didn't think I could do it, but because they went with some "safety choice", such as the bloke that lives round the corner.0
