Santander

Hi All

My wife had recently gone into a branch to update her name on an old account she had. She dealt with the Branch Manager and it semed to go ok. However.... a few days later she received a letter in the post from a local small business owner who had been given a photocopied piece of paper he's been handed with some paperwork. This piece of paper contained a heap of personal information on my wife, name address, DOB, phone etc etc. Luckily the person who was handed it returned it, but obviously we have no idea if this has been shown to anyone or if he's copied it.

So what should she do about it, what can she do? We are planning to go to the bank tomorrow to complain as this is digusting behaviour.

Regards

G

I wouldn't complain at branch level as they are likely the source of the information, albeit inadvertently. I'd put the complaint in writing to their head office, keeping copies should it need to be referred to to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
  • Many thnaks for your advise. It's not neccesarly about financial compensation as I'm sure they never intended to do it, but the amount of information that was disclosed is worrying.

Aside from the FOS, if you're still unhappy with Santanders handling of the complaint, I would escalate this to the Information Commissioners Office who deal with breaches of Data Protection.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.
  • Close the account while your there !
I have a deep burning indifference
  • The question you really want to get to the bottom of was how did this happen. If the answer to that is not satisfactory or their processes are obviously floored then you need to report to ICO - this is so they won't do it again to others.
Santander are awful - mission in life is to warn people since 17-Sep-10, 18-Sep-10 realised one of thousands.
