Welcome Finance - Help Wanted, are they secret agents??

Hi
I just called Welcome Finance as I want to settle my car loan early.
Fair enough.
I called them today and the guy I spoke to said I would have to ask for an early settlement figure in writing as they don't offer them over the phone any more.
He suggested I fax or email it if I want a quick response.
I then asked for the email address. He said we are not allowed to use email externally, only the branch manager has access to external email.
What the hell is the point in that?
So I asked for the Branch Manager's name, and his name, and said I will call tomorrow. Apparently the Branch Manager was not available to talk as he wasn't in the office (yeah right). I have to speak to the branch manager to get told the email address to write to apparently.
Why all the hassle over an early settlement? I just want to pay the thing off and be done with it!
Can anyone offer any advice on what I should do tomorrow?

I would write, fax and e-mail all the same letter with the same date and keep a copy and do it straight away
- what does your loan agreement say about early resettlement as they might sting you for all the interest anyway - if they are unhelpful or not quick in getting back to you contact the financial ombudsman - not sure who that would be in Canada but there must be one

Hmmm...I rang and asked Welcome for a settlement figure too - they told me to write - which I did - but I never even got a reply.0

I hope they do reply to me as I don't have long now before I emigrate. If not i'll just dump the car on their doorstep and say "i'm moving to canada, i don't care for anything you want to threaten me with. here, you deal with it".

Forgot to add that I wrote to them on Thursday, the got the letter on Friday, I checked as I sent it recorded delivery. I didn't send it to my local branch I sent it to the head office in Nottingham.
Apparently if you send correspondence there then it stands at least a 0.01% chance of being read and/or not binned.0 -
yea i tryed phoning as well... wanna find out my settlement amount. same story gotta write a letter.0

It's called stalling tactics and the longer it takes you to settle the more Welcolme make.
Phone them and tell them that under the terms of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 you are entitled to request a settlement figure and that you don't have to give request in writing.
They will tell you they can't and it's their policy. Tell them - fair point but your policy is not the law. It's the law that count's. Now just send me a settlement figure as requested or I will be going to trading standards.
Too many companies try to make things difficult for the consumer.0 -
I'll do that on Friday then if I don't receive anything in the mail.
Can I walk in to the 'local branch' too and demand they offer a settlement figure .
If they don't i'll just leave the car outside and walk home.0 -

You have a point, there Zippy. Never thought about it like that (lightbulb moment!) Too many companies say "it's company policy" and I've usually accepted that as a valid argument. No longer!! Thanks for that.0
