Urgent journey. Best Train tickets help please.

I need to go to London Euston from Wigan on either Monday or Tues next week. Coming back on the same day. I need to be in London for 1pm and dont mind what time I get back at night so can leave London anytime after 7pm.

I know Im not in time to get any of those train seats which you need to book weeks in advance but Im trying to get the best deal I can.

Ive looked at various ticket sites but am getting more baffled by the minute. On 'trainline' I can find return seats for £44 but I dont have time to have the tickets posted to me, at the station today they quoted double that as the best deal.

Ive heard Martin suggest breaking the journey and buying tickets to a mid point station and then another for the rest of the journey. Ive tried some combinations but they work out much more expensive.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice please to help me find the very best price.

On the virgin trains website you can get return for 62 and pick them up at the station on the day. Still quite expensive though!

You could try this;
Wigan NW to Crewe Anytime Day return £12.70
Crewe to London Euston Off Peak return London Midland Trains Only £31 but last train back from London is 18:29
Total Return £43.70

There is also a Super Off Peak Crewe to London return London Midland Trains Only but this won't get you into London until 13:49 for £22.50

Takes a bit longer than a direct Virgin Train but does save a lot, these tickets can be bought at the Railway station or online and sent to the a station ticket machine for collection 2 hours later.

www.raileasy.co.uk also have the £44 fare - you can book this online and then collect from the ticket machines at the station. Have done it a number of times without problem.

All the train operating companies will offer that fare too.

You can avoid the fees that raileasy and thetrainline charge and still get that fare.

I tried East Coast and a couple of others for that fare but could only get the higher one. Which ones did you manage to find it on Wealdroam?

I found them on Transpennine Express Website, they don't charge fees

OP, consider London Midland Trains' Great Escape offer.

With that you can do Crewe to London for £10.00 return.
Can even use the 0733/ 0833 Crewe to Euston trains.
So can be in London before 11am.
Only one return departure after 19:00 though... at 19:54.

Couple that with an Anytime Day Return from Wigan to Crewe at £12.70, gives a total of £22.70.
