Difficulties finding a job

  • Have you tried looking for christmas temp jobs? Many of them keep on good staff and even if it is only temporary at least you can add it to your CV as experience, plus it's some money.

But don't get disheartened it's tough out there at the moment, Keep going and someday your hard work will be rewarded.
I try to help as much as I can. But I'm also honest and speak my mind.

Smoke free since Jan 2014 :D If you want any advice on quitting please send me a PM. :)

Not a stupid question at all :-) I have joined Hays who deal with Engineering professions but I never hear from them. I have called them a few times but all they can say is that nothing has come up and they will let me know if any vacancies arise. I have also joined Matchtech, Randstad and ICE, and uploaded my CV on there for any employers to view but again nothing :-(

Hi mistymemo, can I please ask what you do in engineering? Are you an engineer by trade? If so, what sort of engineer?

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Just stop right there. You do not pass or fail interviews.

You either get the job or you don't. If on the day, someone else got it, it could always be the case that they would have employed you happily, but for the fact that the other candidate turned up and was chosen instead. In fact if the shortlisting was done correctly, all of the interviewed candidates should be worthy of the job.

No need to kill yourself with negative thinking

Excellent advice, i'm going to copy and paste that for the next time I go for an interview, just hope I don't have to use it.

Thanks for saying that, I can see how my negative thinking may be hindering me. I should be grateful I even got an interview :-)

    Hi Kiki

I am a traffic engineer, where my work involved designing traffic calming schemes to reduce accidents, ranging from waiting restrictions to zebra crossings.
  • Hi Mistymemo,

Don’t give up. You’ve made it through to 4 interviews so you must be doing something right. Treat these as a practice run for the job that you finally get. I’m in a similar situation (different job area) 3 interviews, no job offer yet, but another interview arranged for Friday for a 4-month contract role. Here’s my thoughts:

    1. Get a free review of your CV over the phone eg Fuller CV did mine; offer a service too.

    2. Is there a trade body for civil engineering? Check their website for jobs. Any online trade mags - could be articles on companies you'd like to follow up their websites to see if there are any openings.

    3. Get email alerts from specialist and composite jobsites eg:
    civilengineeringjobs.co.uk
    randstadcpe.com
    cv-library. co.uk
    jobs.trovit.co.uk
jobserve.com - I always get a good response from this one for IT jobs

    4. Don’t be afraid to go for contract work in your line of business. You can use an umbrella company like Giant rather than set up your own Ltd company.

Hope this helps! Keep your chin up, you are getting through the paper sift to interview ahead of 500 others who are not. You just need to be in the right interview at the right time to get offered a job.

    Good luck!
  • It has been said before but I think it's important to get feedback from interviews. You may feel it's too late to do so, but if you've had an interview in the past few weeks, why not get in touch and ask for feedback?

Sometimes it's like banging your head against a brick wall, sometimes they give you answers that just feel like they're fobbing you off, e.g. I was once told they felt I lived too far away! You'd think it was my call whether or not I wanted to make the trek wouldn't you? Sometimes it may be something that's just beyond your control, e.g. apparently, I didn't get a job once because I don't have a car (because I didn't have a job in order to afford to run a car )

I hope that soon you'll be looking back thinking it was all for the best as you settle into a fabulous new job! :j
