Housing Benefit & entitled to

Hi guys, hoping that someone can offer me some pearls of wisdom ... please :)

Out of curiosity I plugged all of hubby and I's info into entitledto.com this morning and pretty much all the figures they gave me back were spot on as to what we receive. I was surprised however to see that we may be entitled to £57 a week in housing benefit. We have never even though about claiming this before.

We currently live in a privately rented 3 bed house which costs £500 a month in rent with our 2 toddler girls. We're due a baby at the end of Feb/beginning of March ( a little boy :T). With having the 3 kidlets according to the LHA site we're "entitled" to live in a 3 bed house. Also according to the LHA site 3 bed houses in my postcode area are "entitled" to up to £150/week help which equates to £650 a month, so more than what we pay in rent. (although I dont really uderstand the keeping of however much etc)

Hubby earns around £27k (gross) and I gave up work in February as childcare was going to cost more than I was earning so it was a no brainer really! I always thought that we earned too much to claim housing benefit?

When our little guy is born should be apply for it, or with all the changes/cuts that are happening will be laughed at for even thinking we might be elligible?

Sorry if this is a stupid question I just know naff all about benefits other than CTC and CB. Not sure if it makes any difference but we live in Scotland.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer :)

if your rent is so much lower than the LHA then you will not get as much as the calculator says. Also remember your tax credits will increase also so that may also reduce the ammount payable but you may get something

You should put in a claim for LHA right now, today. There are £16.2 billion of unclaimed benefits in the UK.

If you don't apply You will not get

On 27k wages plus tax credits and child benefit you will not get any help with your rent.
Although the LHA figures say the amount this is if you are entitled to the maximum amount, it goes on your income so the more you earn the less you will get. And on 27k you will not get anything and quite rightly so. With your benefits also it will take you to 30k

What about now? You only have 2 children; so would only be entitled to a 2 bedroom house.

:D Congratulations on your little one :D

However because you currently live in a 2 bedroom house which is sufficient for your needs, then you will not be entitled to a 3 bedroom house.

If you were to move to a 3 bed house once bubs is born then you would be entitled to a larger rent allowance (and subsequently more CTC etc) but as has been said it is likely that you husband earns too much. The £15 payment is about to be abolished so even finding somewhere that was less than that would not help you really.

You could ring your LHA and ask them the question, depending on where you live you may be entitled.

I think you misunderstand. I'm not trying to get a bigger house. We already live in a 3 bed house. And I was only asking purely because I wanted to see how we'd be financially after the baby is born (we're currently trying to work out how long hubby can take off work after the birth). So I used the scenario as us having already had our new baby.

For anyone thinking I'm trying to "play or diddle" the system then you are very wrong (not talking about anyone specific but I sense a hint of frostyness). I was only asking because the website had thrown it up. I'm sure everyone would be grateful of a little help if they were ENTITLED to it, which is why I asked. I was shocked that it was there after I put all of our info in and all the other figures had come back pretty much what we had calculated as, like I said, I didn't think we'd be entitled to any help at all, which will more than likely be the case.

If we're not entitled to it then that's fine. I just have no idea how the system works so thought I would ask some people who did.

    Thanks for the replies.

We currently live in a 3 bedroom house and pay £500 in rent. We're not looking to move to get extra (well any) benefits or anything like that. I was just putting in the info that the website asked for and found out things about the LHA allowances in the process. I knew we had a good deal on rent but I didn't realise quite how good until now.

    Thanks again

The rules are all changing next year - so, what you may be entitled to if you have 3 children now, you may not be entitled to next year.

You should claim it anyway and get the ACTUAL experts to decided whether or not you are entitled.

This forum is a joke and does not give any help or encouragement

Anyone who listens to the so-called experts on it needs their heads looked at IMO (YOU know who you are)

Shame on you Martin Lewis for hosting it in your name
