French Doors or Patio?

We are going to have our dining room window and the brickwork below removed and replaced with either french doors or a patio door.

I would appreciate any opinions before we take the final decision which to go for.

We've got french doors in the dining room. Personally I think they look better than patio doors, but that's just personal preference. I like them as you can have both open and it makes the room feel really airy, but if you are outside, they stick out onto the patio.

Patio doors solve the doors sticking out problem, but you can only have half of the space open.

    Does that make sense? :D
Here I go again on my own....

Definitely french doors are much more chic :)
  • French doors look so much nicer! And, if you use parliament hinges, the doors will open 180 degrees and sit flat to the wall.

Patio Doors, they can just be slid back and left at any position.

No problem with the wind catching them when they are open.;)
  • Ive had bad experiences with french doors sagging over time, and also people walking into them when they are open. So personally id go with a patio door.

Given the choice I'd go for folding patio doors.

I hadn't noticed that. I just pulled the first photo that illustrated what I meant.:(

We've just had a bay window with French doors replaced with bi-folding doors. In our case, they open into a new conservatory and really allow the two rooms to be linked together. When the doors are fully opened, they take up about 10" of the 8' opening.
