Boiler Packed Up Any MoneySavingBoilerExperts Online?

Hi
I have a Potterton Envoy 50 Boiler in my home.
Intermittently over the last year it has stopped heating and the LED Display shows a Flashing "E." Error / Fault Code.
The Manual says
"Control Failed - Replace Control"
Not very useful info in my opinion, I found that pushing and holding the Reset button worked to reset the boiler and it would fire up again, working for anywhere between a few months or a few hours before the same error occurred again.
Sadly the same fault appeared last night and reset trick no longer works, the E just stays up flashing after the button is released.
I found an old post on "fixedforfree" website with a simlar problem, the poster who replied says that it is due to a fan failure and suggests a little dismantling of the boiler to clean and lube the fan.
The opening poster doesn't reply to say if this was a success, before I get out of my depth and take the boiler appart with potentially dangerous consequences has any of you kind souls got any further advice.
Can anyone confirm if it is likely to be
Control Problem
Fan Problem
Another Problem!
And if this is something that a DIYer with no boiler experience but a bit of common sense and a garage full of tools should tackle?
Many thanks for any suggestions offered
Any help most appreciated
Gavin

You have got to be nuts to even think about fixing it yourself. Not Again0

someone here might be able to help www.plumbersforums.co.uk but dont touch it yourself it can cause all sorts of complications not only with the boiler but any warranty or even your house insurance if it were to go wrong .;)0

Very diplomatic.
The next door neighbours might be a tad angry when their house goes up in flames & they cant get to the dog because of the amount of fire engines on their drive. Not Again0 -

Ha ha, thank you all for your words of concern, I took a look at the fan, it really wasnt a major operation, just a couple of wing nuts but I cant see any fault there.
Dont worry, im not about to get involved in the guts of it, was just thinking fan or pcb would be my limit.
I went on to call British Gas and the manufacturers own support, Potterton (Heateam).
Unbelievably Heateam will not touch the boiler since it is over 10 years old, even though it is a model previously manufactured by them....hows that for technical support!
BGas have a couple of options from:
Repair: £79-£350ish labour PLUS parts
Repair + Contract: £99 to fix 1st fault plus £20 per month for 12 months
The second option sounds appealing except if they find more than 1 fault with the boiler then the cost could quickly escalate.
Really don't know what to do for the best
Any further advice greatly apprciated.
Has anyone used the Bgas home boiler repair/servicing contracts or similar?0 -
I too have the same fault on the same boiler. I have the advantage of being a fully paid up member of the exclusive British Gas Homecare scheme at 20 something quid a month... It has paid dividends though as this boiler is always failing for one reason or another.
However we are on our 5th visit I think for this fault... the case of the flashing "E". We've had a new control unit... kerching!!!
A new valve control... kerching!!!
Several hours labour...kerching!!!
And yes you guessed it it still is not working...
However they are very quick at coming and are trying hard to resolve the problem, I can't fault them.
I'm interested in what resolved your issue Gavin...0 -
is this a condensing boiler if so your condesate pipe is probably frozen thsi is the plastic waste pipe that goes outside check that first, if its got ice in it a kettle full of hot water shoudl fix it.If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Notice the date of the OP was 22 Oct so not likely to be a frozen pipe.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0
