Vanquis paid off in full, still took direct debit

Hi, I've been trying to search for this for a few days now with no joy.

I got my first CC from Vanquis a couple of months ago, with my first statement due on the 22nd Sept (best birthday present ever!) I paid off the full balance by debit card a day or two later, and the minimum payment indicator on the evanquis site dropped back down to £0, but on the payment due date (17th Oct) they still took the previous minimum payment by direct debit. I was quite lucky that I actually had money in the account it came out since I wasn't expecting it.

So basically I'm cofused. Is this normal? Should I not have paid by debit card or something? Is this going to be reported to look as though I paid off just the minimum at the last minute rather than the full amount straight away? (and is stuff like that even relevent?)

Statement day today and I'm not sure how to proceed now. I'm also loathe to call 087 numbers unless absolutely necessary so I thought I'd ask here first.

Depends on the card, some will adjust the direct debit to account for any payments between the statement date and due date (or 5 days before hand when they actually call the DD), others still take the Direct Debit no matter what is paid in the meantime.

Don't worry about what is reported this will have no impact, it just means that you know that in future your DD payment will be taken whatever you pay off the statement.

It's the way Vanquis operate - if you sign up for minimum DD payment, they take it regardless - I had a telephone conversation with them about it just a few weeks ago. Have since cancelled the DD...

Other card providers do the same - for example, my Silvercard and Santander Zero work in this way also
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

It's ALWAYS a good idea to have a DD set up for the minimum payment, just in case.

If this means you overpay then you can either reduce the manual payment by the minimum amount, or pay in full anyway and just have the extra payment reduce the next month's statement balance. If you use your card regularly then this is not that big a deal imho.

As regards paying immediately or at the last minute - afaik it does not make a blind bit of difference.
  • It would also be a good idea to spend the payment they have taken via DD quickly as having your account in credit with Vanquis is against their T&C's........

Also if you ever need to phone them ring this number: 01623 23 23 23 this will get you through to the same lin as if you rang the 0870 number ;)

And for future reference re any 0870 or 0845 or 0844 numbers look on the site saynoto0870 for a generic number.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I'm having problems getting them to actually take the direct debit. They've failed to do so the past 2 months and i've ended up paying late via debit card, when that actually works.
