If it's your first cc I think you'll have to go with a credit builder card, try the Barclaycard Pre-application checker to avoid nasties on your report and then judge your options from there. Just type it into Google.

If it's your very first card then I doubt you'll qualify for the very best deals unless you happen to be Alan Sugar.

This isn't true, the OP is probably best to try his/her own main bank (which has wages/pensions etc going into it) firstly as they will likely give her a standard card with whatever their current offering is - which may be competitive.

I would only suggest going for a sub-prime card (credit builder) if he/she has to!

Also cover the basics, ie are you on the Electoral Role at your address before applying for a Credit Builder (assuming your bank isn't interested in providing an account)

I would approach your own bank and certainly do not waste any money on checking your credit history as each lender will have it's own scores.

In the event that your bank won't give you a card, then you could ask them why.

However please bear in mind that just because you are a homeowner and have had past car finance, your bank will assess you on criteria other than this - regular income and a record of reliable payment history - income to outgoings and ability to pay. The credit market has hardened and it is not nearly so easy to get a card in some cases as it once was.

Good idea to check credit reports - ensure your information is properly recorded, you're not associated with anyone you shouldn't be etc. Only £2 (or free if you sign up to an Experian type service and then cancel - a bit of a hassle). It's the "credit score" that's a waste of money. Yep all lenders have their own scoring, but they will base it on the kind of stuff you can see in your report.

"Homeowner" might be good if you've got a mortgage and are keeping up with the payments and in the sense that you are less likely to disappear off the face of the earth. Once upon a time, it was also good because it suggested you had assets and ultimately these could be used to pay debts. Whilst this is still technically the case, it's less of a factor now because it's much more difficult for CC companies to get their cash this way.
