redundancy mortgage and career change

Not sure if this has ever been posted before but thought it was worth a try as it covers 3 areas in one.
I am likely to be in a redundant position in next few months. I know that when I go I want to retrain to do so a qualification that will help me start a completely different career. I get a decent payout £30k +. I would like to payoff my oustanding mortgage first as its my biggest outlay per month: can I do this and get help to study for a new career? Will I qualify for JSA? I have over 20 yrs service paying tax and NIns. Grateful any advice.

    Hi,

Lots of questions there, as there are bound to be, with such a change.

I'll try to help, yes you should be able to claim JSA for 6 months, yes I know you have paid in for the last 20 years or so   :D but they only pay contribution based for 6 momths, after that its income based, which I guess means, means-tested. I've yet to reach that part......

At the moments, (in Leicester - if these a post code lottery with these things), I'm entitled to alot of free training, I've taken/am taking Emergency First Aid at Work, Adult Numeracy and Literacy Certificates, Food Hygiene Certificate, Hazard Awareness at Work, (used to be H&S at work)

When, and if, you have to sign on, I would ask if you can pay off your mortgage with your money first, you get an appointment pretty quick, within a few days, so they'ed be no delay with your mortage to speak of.
