monitor power off locked - SOLVED

At work I like to turn the monitor off (when I'm away from the desk and after work), and work has said we should do this, but after moving to a new desk the power off button does not work for the monitor, there is a message saying "power off locked". So I can only do it after a shut down.

Is this something that can be changed in control panel or somewhere else? I may not be able to change it due to the admin locks but I'd like to know where it is theoretically changed so I can have a go.

OS = Win XP

    I have never come across this message in nine years of working with Windows XP!

    I'd be a little suspicious that it relates to your PC/laptop, although it might be some obscure option in Group Policy that has been set up by your IT staff. Have you tried asking them?

    The monitor power buttons as far as I know is independent of the PC, I suggest you look into the MENU settings on the monitor and see if there is a setting that allows the lock/unlock of the power button.
  • Switch the socket off at the wall?
    Windows XP has no control over the physical buttons of monitors. This will be a setting in the monitor.

    It's a Hewlett Packard 17 or 19 inch TFT widescreen, that's all I know.

    I'll have a look in the monitor controls when I'm next using it. If there's an update I'll let you know

    Thanks

    I fiddled in the monitor menu and there was a battery icon (power) said something like power management, anyway I set something in there to "off' or 'on' and I can now turn off the monitor.
