Wireless in Linux

I am trying to get my wireless PCMCIA card to work in linux (Ubuntu). It is a 3Com officeconnect PC Card (3CRWE154g72). I have tried using the windows drivers from 3com's website in conjunction with ndiswrapper but it does not work.

When i use the command
ndiswrapper -i 3C154G72.inf (which is my windows driver file)
I get the error message
couldn't copy 3C154G72.inf at /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper line 135

and when I list the installed drivers using ndiswrapper -l, it list the 3c154g72 - invalid driver!

Does anyone know what the error message (lin 135) means, and why the driver isn't working.

Thanks

I don't understand why you expect a windoze driver to work for Linux!

This thread / forum may be of help where they refer to native linux drivers. "Check out prism54.org for drivers and details."

  • From what I understand, ndiswrapper allows native windows drivers to work under a Linux environment.

OK, but I would have thought that it would have been less hassle to use native linux drivers if they are available for the device.

Have a look to see what line 135 is in the inf file.

Try looking on the forums http://www.ubuntuforums.org/
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

    Lines is the inf file
    133 [COMMON_NDIS.reg.NT]
    134 ;; HKR, ,EnumPropPages32 ,0 ,"CCU3C154.dll,NetPropPageProvider"
    135 HKR,NDI\Interfaces ,UpperRange ,0 ,"ndis5"
    136 HKR,NDI\Interfaces ,LowerRange ,0 ,"ethernet

Thank you to everyone who has replied.
I am not sure what kind of prism54 firmware I need - on its website it lists only PCI cards with ISL3877, ISL3880 and ISL3890 will work - I am not sure what this means and what one I would have to download. I will persevere and hopefully get it working soon - I am a Linux noob so it may take a little while to get working properly

/usr/sbin/ndiswrapper is giving the error not the inf file. See what line
135 says in /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper. Do you need to run as superuser ?
Something in /usr/sbin suggests you should.

DR. BENWAY: "Very likely but there's no time."

    From here:

    http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php/Installation#Compile_and_install

If you get an error with ndiswrapper -i filename.inf along the lines of "couldn't copy filename.inf at line xxx", then 'filename.inf' most probably does not exist. (Unfortunately ndiswrapper won't give a sensible error message such as "can't find 'filename.inf'"). Check your spelling carefully and remember to use upper / lower case where appropriate.
You will have to correct this failed "installation" with ndiswrapper -e filename (note: not filename.inf) before trying again.

try using the full path of the filename, or ./blah.inf if in the current directory.

Thank you very much DrBenway - that was the problem - when i ran sudo [command] it worked fine and was easy to configure afterwards.
