Thanks Quentine. I'm confused after reading the post by withabix as this op seemed to have a completely different experience.

Ignore withabix's reference to getting "no claims bonus", and this being "standard practice across the UK". That is just wrong.

As already posted, company drivers don't get "proper" NCB.

(And as already posted, what many insurers will do is take into account evidence of claim free driving experience provided by employers, but this is not proper NCB)

Can you post links to backup your opinion please Quentin, as mine is from actual experience and not hypothesis.

Hundreds of my colleagues who chose to move back to running their own cars benefitted from this and continue to do so every year, as I do.

Hi, thank you so much for your replies. This is really helpful. Will try to sort this out asap. It was an online quote but we rang to say that the as we had to contact the company in order for them to send NCD proof it would take slightly longer. Perhaps a call to AXA is required to get to the bottom of this.

We did call them to double check one point and they said the reason they can't insure the car now is that the quote was given on the basis of NCD, however as the car is a sports car they don't insure this type of car without NCD.

Thanks again, this is all abit new to us so all your views give us something to think on.

Maybe it would be more helpful for you to realise the difference between "No Claim Bonus" and a claim free driving history!

I am not expressing an opinion, but fact.

Driving as a named driver on a company policy no more entitles you to proper NCD as does driving as a named driver on a private policy!

If you want a reference, then look no further than this thread!

Axa clearly don't agree with you!

I agree with Withabix and that is also from personal experience. My OH had been a company car driver for 9 plus years and all he had to do was get a letter from his HR dept stating he had driven accident free, and the insurer awarded him the full NCB discount, that was 4 years ago, and we have never had any issues.

ETA I do understand the distinction between claim free driving and NCB, but it would seem that the acceptance of that, and what they award on the basis of that claim free driving history must differ from insurer to insurer, as he was definitely given the full discount.

Both Quentin and withabix are correct in what they are saying, from experience.
As withabix says, it is usual for a letter from HR to be accepted and a discount given equal to the NCD.
Howver as Quentin says, it is not a true NCD, so that has to built up personally. As it's not a true NCD, it's not transferable so people tend to stay with the insurer as well, until the 5 years NCD is actually achieved.

Maybe AXA don't do this, or maybe they're being a bit petty as they were told that you had a NCD, and now don't.

Is there not a point here about it being a van?
I thought van, bike and car insurance are usually seperate from an NCD perspective althouth there are individual companies that might allow them to be transferred.

Axa have not been particularly clear, but it could be the var part and not the company part that is the issue here.

BTW -If you are declined insurance because they don't offer it for your situation (sports car and no NCD) then that's not the same as being declined for other reasons (didn't pay or made false declarations), so I don't believe it need to be declared.
If they can't offer it as a product that's different from it being declined to you personally.

The approach now we are taking is calling firms for a quote and being extremely upfront about what has happened and see whether they can quote to us. Some of the firms have been really helpful but say they will accept the previous 8 years no claims from a different insurer with our previous own cars, so next year it will go up to 9 years NCD. I hope this is true if they are stating it when we are getting quotes.

The car has a V6 engine and a sports car so with 6 points aswell maybe this is helping the price now rise from the previous £500 to approx just over £1000.

Also just to clarify when we got the online quote we did ring AXA to say that that we needed to get two NCD type insurance docs - one our own, and one for company vehicle so they were aware of this and maybe could have told us sooner they could no longer insure..

It's from 3 years ago (there was 8 years NCD in total)
Then 3 years from the company insurance which is most recent.
