I have now put lines onto my dispenser cup so I can measure it out properly instead of my usual...Oh that looks enough lolIf you obey all the rules...you miss all the fun!! Katherine Hepburn0

I bought a new washing machine last year, and it actually said in the instructions to use half the washing powder manufacturer's recommended dosage. Not sure if this was because of some special feature of the WM or their observation on recommended doses. It's a 7.5 kilo capacity and I also only use one tablet, which works perfectly even for a full load. If it was heavily soiled I might put a small slug of Nappisan in the soap dispenser as well. On the odd occasion DH has put something on, and used 2 as per instructions on box of tablets, there has been a nasty powdery residue left on the clothes.0

since reading these boards, i use a couple of tablespoons of powder in a wash ball thingy, with a squirt of Stardrops. Clothes come up really clean even son's football kit!!0

don't want to hijack, but is the liquid cheaper than powder?
Thanks,

I have always put less than they recommend on the amounts of washing powder in the washing machine. Most of the time the clothes are not dirty, just generally sweaty and mucky, just need refreshing so why use alot of products to clean them! x0

I found some bottles of Ariel Biological Washing Liquid in a 50% extra free bottle. They cost £3.28 for a 2.25 litre bottle. This was in Tesco.
I thought this was quite a good price but then I don't have access to a Costco etc where you get reasonable prices all the time.
For an own brand/value then the price would be much cheaper I expect. We tend to get branded liquid when its on offer. They all come round on offer again and again at Tesco and Sainsburys. We usually buy Surf, Persil, Fairy and Bold.0 -
I use soapnuts - doing about four loads a day a kilo lasts about 3 months. just add a bit of ecover bleach for whites and a spray of stardrops on stains.I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080

I use powder so I can adjust the amount I use. I started doing this because of my daughter's skin condition. I dont know if it was my washing machine but the soapiness of the water during the spin cycle prompted me. And to be honest I have not had to re-wash anything because they didnt clean the first time.x x x0

:shhh: I dithered about posting here in case everyone killed me at once, but decided I'd be honest and confess the error of my ways. I switched from powder to tablets as I always tended to add more than needed because we always seemed to loose the plastic measure that came with the powder. Since then I've always used two tablets without thinking  I'm new to OS in some ways but other things I've done forever. I even used to use fabric conditioner with Bold 2 in 1! Kicked that habit 6 months ago and never looked back, I really thought that the 2 packs were the measured dose in my defence, yes I know I should have read the instructions
Still lesson learned and from now on I'll use just one tablet, and cut the shopping bill even further, thanks for making me think and seeing the error in my ways, I'm sure it won't be the first or last time, but I'll keep trying until I get it right!NSD Challenge 2010:Jul 12/12; Jun 21/14 :T; May : 6/6

That's what I love about this site - we can all learn something from someone - and I'm always really pleased to pick-up yet another way of saving a few pennies  to you all!0
