university accomodation charges

Options
Hi

First post, apologies if its in the wrong forum.
In late September my daughter moved in to university accomodation on campus.
After going to the initial meeting for her course she found that the university had changed the course content to something that did not interest her and she decided to change to another university.
With in the first week she complete all the necessary paperwork and moved out of her room on 1st October.

She got a £397 bill (6 weeks rent) payable on 28th October from the university residential services this morning for the room even though she is not there and is enrolled at another university.

Obviously she doesnt want to pay for a room she isnt living in.

Any advise please?

Did she get a replacement or just leave?

Have you looked at the terms and conditions of her tenancy with the university?

I think (although I'm not 100% sure) my university charges the person for the room if they move out but stay a student at the university, until they find a replacement. But the person doesn't have to pay if they leave the university.

They might have a policy where she needs to pay until someone else has moved into that room.
  • She's transferred to another university, one that is local to us.
She was in the room 6 days and this morning she got a bill for 6 weeks rent.

Everything was done properly with student services, finance and accommodation departments so we're at a loss to understand why she's got this invoice.

It might have taken them six weeks to fill the room. Each contract is different, and she would need to look at hers to see what she is liable for.
