New York

Hi folks,

Thinking about going to New York, where abouts would you recommend I stay, to be near all the action, but not bang in the middle of it all, I like busy but not to busy.

Thanks

You dont like it too busy ? :D Let me quote from wikipedia :

'' New York is the most populous city in the United States, and the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world.

The city's 2009 estimated population approached 8.4 million,[2] and with a land area of 305 square miles (790 km2),[3][4][5] New York City is the most densely populated major city in the United States. ''

So.......... with that in mind do you still want to go there ?

On a serious note we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn just off Times Square, great location. I suppose you could say its close to, but not right in the centre of the action.

    Good luck.

I love busy but hate it when I am trying to sleep, therefore, in a less noisy part...if they exist!

Upper West Side is quite gentle. There are plenty of small hotels, it's cheaper than midtown and still pretty easy to get to midtown. I reckon up to about 71st street and staying near to the park is still walkable to Times Square, but different people have different ideas about what is walking distance. You'll have to use the subway or cabs to get downtown.

New York is all about walking!
When I was last there stopped opposite ground zero.
Walked to Battery Park, over to Brooklyn bridge, up through Chinatown, Little Italy all the way to Central Park.. and back again... jeez my feet were sore the next day :)

i stayed in the flatiron district last week corner of 27th and madison avenue in the MAve hotel.

location was ideal for me not too far from everything but quiter than stopping by TS.Subways, times square,ESB in easy walking distance should you wish i also walked to central park and TOTR with ease.not to mention got a really good rate for a large room.
  • I stayed upper west side I think it was around 110 last November I had to get the subway to most places but it only took a short time and cost nothing!

i stayed upper west too (96th Street) which was plenty close enough to everything you actually "need" (drugstores, basics) and litterally a 3-4 minute walk to the Subway to get you anywhere you wanna go! Mind you, it also helped that i was right on broadway so it was "easy" enough to walk the length of Times Square et all, but i wouldn't recommend it on a regular basis & certainly wouldn't attempt it these days :D

  • Thanks Folks, advice is much appreciated!
  • We stayed at The Beacon Hotel on the Upper West Side (74th & Broadway). Quiet area, couple of blocks from Central Park, AMAZING market across the road and a really lovely hotel (each room has a small kitchen area). Would definately stay there again if I ever go back.

2 blocks from 72nd street subway station which had direct lines to all the tourist spots. $27 for an unlimited use week pass and the subway is very easy & safe to use.
Common sense just isn't that common any more....
  • I went to NY about 5 or 6 years ago and stayed at the Herald Square Hotel which was really cheap but had all you needed and was clean. It's within walking distance to the Empire State Building and Macy's so that should tell you roughly where it is (I get very confused with all the road numbers although it's supposed to be the simplest system in the world!). The area was pretty quiet but you're just a walk or subway-ride from everything.
