I got told the same thing by HSBC - that you had to close your other accounts before you could get a basic bank account with them.

Its starting to sound more like their policy than law though...

  • Nationwide turned me down for a basic a/c because i "failed a credit check". They did not ask my permission to do the credit check in the first place as far as i was concerned i was not asking for credit. Also found staff their to be thick & rude.

Thinking of complaining to FSA or Data Protection Registrar.

    Nationwide proud to be useless.

I have a Natwest Step account its their basic account, no cheque book or overdraft facilities but it does have a Solo card with it which comes in handy, not accepted in all shops though which can be a bit annoying.

  • That's the a/c i applied for. Dropped the form off at the branch they said they would ring me later. Got the call back off a rather surly women telling me i had failed the credit check.

Think they have broke the law.

    Now with the Co-op.

    Thanks

A natwest step account is good. I have one now I'm bankrupt and its great, I can still have direct debits going out. If I need to order something over the internet or phone most will accept the SOLO card.
