Should I tell the CSA they made a mistake?

I told the CSA that my son was starting work on 22nd Sept as an apprentice and they told me the maintenence from his dad would stop as of that day. I checked a bank statement the other day and found that the payments havent stopped.

I thought about ringing them and pointing out the mistake but then wondered if i should bother wasting my money on another phone call to them when i've already done my bit and informed them (ahead of time) and they haven't bothered to stop it!

What do you think? I'm not going to spend the money or anything cos i know it's not mine but would i be doing anything wrong by not telling them?

If they didn't pay as promised - would you be so complacent?

Of course you should phone and you should do it today - have some moral fibre about you.

They are still taking payments from your ex partner and that is wholly wrong.

You should inform them of course, but what you might find is that the payments are made in arrears not in advance, so maybe this is the final payment.
  • As 13Kent said, they could be arrears. You may find that if you left it - the CSA would deny you informed them and you'd have to pay it all back!
From a moral point of view - of course you should point it out - I'm surprised the NRP hasn't already spotted it.

You need to ring the CSA if only to check that this is not a payment in arrears - I cant remember if you pay in advance or arrears!

If they have made a mistake then you need to inform them and also tell the NRP, otherwise they will be coming back for the money that they have overpaid you.

I'm just a bit confused as to why on earth you wouldn't question it ? In your own words you're not going to spend the money or anything cos it's not yours so that's exactly why you should be telling them !!

Confirm with the agency that that will be your last payment as i believe payments are made in arrears. Get them to confirm in writing that your case is closed and there are no arrears due to you. They will in turn confirm with the NRP that the case is closed.
I wouldn't just keep the money if you are in any doubt.

It appears you're asking if you can get away with claiming for longer and what are the repercussions?!?

Of course, morally, you should contact them again and double check that they have updated the information you supplied. From past experience, and what I have read, but I could be wrong, if you have advised them it is their fault if they continue to take from the NRP. The NRP can, if they realise the mistake, claim back any overpayment but the CSA rarely ask the PWC to pay back any overpayment, especially if you have updated them correctly.

At the end of the day, we can advise as much as we want to the moral/correct way, but it is up to you what you actually do!!

if you dont call them i really hope you have to pay it all back, may teach a lesson to people about claiming money when they not entitled to it.

most people who pay csa money struggle as it is and to keep taking when not entitled is fraud

Yes, been there and there is no point stressing cos it doesn't get you anywhere!

My heart bleeds it really does! You have no idea of the ins and outs of this case or how badly he has treated his son so don't even expect me to care! And just for the record - the CSA are still taking payments from him so its NOT ME taking his money!

Erm... read the post properly! I AM NOT CLAIMING ANYTHING - they are simply still paying it despite the fact that i have ALREADY INFORMED THEM!

If they cant afford maintenence then they shouldnt have kids! You are making a rather offensive assumption about absent parents financial situation when you have no idea on individual circumstances! How exactly am i committing fraud? :rotfl:I have informed the CSA of the change in circumstance and i havent touched the money therefore i haven't claimed for or taken anything that doesn't belong to me!

The pair of you ought to be careful you dont fall off the moral high ground and hurt yourself!! :rotfl:

I don't see why I should pay for another phone call to them for their mistake and an ex partner who is too dumb to notice the CSA are still taking payments! Phone calls to the CSA arn't cheap and considering I have alrady done my duty by informing them already I was just querying if I would be in any trouble by not wasting my money on a call that I stand to gain nothing from.

Thanks to all who offered genuine advice without feeling the need to take the moral high ground on the matter.
