Exactly the tyre I was considering.

Well it is marked on the sidewall as a winter tyre, but if you had a scale from summer to snow it'd look something like this.

    Summer
    All Season
    Entyre
    Winter---Snow

It'll definitely be my next set of tyre's

I've just gone for a cheap set of alloys off ebay and will stick winter tyres on it rather than a "master of none" all season tyre.

Will save in the long term over the costs of having tyres swapped twice a year, and will take up the same amount of space in my shed, only I can't store things down the middle of the stack of tyres.

A few years ago I spoke to continental tech support about a failed tyre, the conversation got onto winter tyres and the tech guy told me he runs their winter tyre (wintercontact) on his MG TF all year round.

His argument is in winter it’s 300% better and in summer it’s only 20% worse although the summer wear rate might be a problem if he didn’t work for continental.
  • Very few snowflake marked all season tyres out there, Vredestein make the Quatrac 2 and 3, the 3 generally being higher speed and lower profile sizes.

Pug 106 in the family on Quatrac 2's, just replaced them with the same at around 3mm, rotated they'd covered over 40k of severely thrashed (young female) miles giving good grip in all weathers.

I have used Toyo Proxes in the last five winters, three of which where in a Subaru Legacy, two in a Mondeo TDCi, they where more than adequate.

I did use the Subaru for a winter with the original Bridgestones on and they weren't realy confidence inspiring.

I had considered buying a set of winter tyres to use from Oct/Nov through to Mar/Apr, but haven't done so as the Toyos where fine.

Though if I put some alloys on my Mondeo then i will use the current 16" steels for just that purpose, I was considering the Toyo Snowtrac tyre.

The main reason I thought for winter tyres being better in cold weather was that there was more rubber in the compound, can't remember where I read it.

Also when it comes to snow the tread pattern is also relevant, just because it is a winter tyre doesn't mean it will be good in snow. If you look at some winter tyres their tread pattern is not much different to normal tyres.

Snow is a relatively small time part of winter driving for much of the UK (appreciate more so for some) but I would wager pretty much ANY winter tyre will be better in the snow than ANY summer tyre.

Whether that justifies the extra cost of another set of wheels is something else. I will be ordering some this week to fit next month (still about 14 degrees here in the SE of UK) as my massive 19" 275/30 and 245/35's are just about as useless as you can get in slippery winter coniditons
