PlasterBoard or Plastering on to wall

Hi, I'm sorry if the title does not make sense as I'm really confused, I'm having an extension built (giving two kids bedrooms upstairs) and although it's over 3 weeks late work is now progressing to the plastering the stage.

We always knew the rooms were small though I had thought that the rooms will be plastered and the thickness will only be a few mm although to my horror I yesterday noticed the builder stick what he called plasterboard all over the ceilings and all four walls and I was told he would plaster over it (skimmed??) this has really made the rooms appear even smaller as I had thought the walls will just be plastered over not have a bord stuck over them and this to be plastered over.

Is this standard practice as I've just checked my current walls and they just seem to have plaster no board???

Please can any let me know if this is how it is done now as I've spent most of the night worrying!!

Thanks in advance
Sara

First I asume you have a cavaty. If not he may be lining the wall this way. Although it is usely done this way to give a smooth surface for the plaster. Very often they dab and dob glue on the board and stick to the walls, I have heard this is how it is done now to save time in skimming the brickwork

This is usually done if there are lots of holes. We're having lots of plastering done at the moment and one particular area was very bad so instead of loading the holes up with bonding, my husband and the plasterer put up plasterboard (cut to size), which was subsquently skimmed over. It looks great and gives a good finish.

Jenny its new work sara said extention, go sit on the naughty step for not reading properly :rotfl:

Sara; Yes its called dry lining or dot and dab (as a slang).

Skimming is the smooth surface you need for decorating on, there is no way you can skim onto brick/blockwork.

Dry lining is the modern way of accheiving a surface ready to skim on, the old backing plaster method has been over taken by dry lining as it is quicker/ cheaper/ easier/ less messy/ and drys quicker. It is no better or worse than the old method. And is no thicker or thiner room-size-wise ,neither , so dont worry.

And yes I am a plasterer, with 22 boring years of experiance :(

After its painted the room will look bigger anyway. it always looks smaller and darker with just plaster on the walls!
