Powerflush has broken my boiler!
We have been getting hassled for a powerflush for over a year by British Gas. We finally gave in as our boiler was making a terrible noise and we were told it was because the pump was struggling due to sludge which was also present in the pipes. It had its annual Homecare service a few months back, and although its 10 years old we were told apart from the sludge its working fine and will last for a quite a few more years.
Anyway, the powerflush was done last week and we now have water constantly dripping out of the boiler causing huge puddles on the worktop every morning. The engineer came out and said it was caused by the powerflush and the part needed was obsolete so we will have to have a new boiler. He said to refuse to pay for the powerflush and try and get a discount on a new boller.
The powerflush was about £600 but a boiler is going to cost double that and we just dont have the money!
Any ideas where we stand before I ring them today
Thanks
Justine

1) Boiler was working fine before powerflush.
2) BG service boiler
3) BG advise powerflush
4) BG do powerflush
5) Boiler needs replacing as result of powerflush
Send BG the bill for new boiler and refuse to pay for powerflush.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hi jus71 - I would question the point that spares are no longer available for a 10 year old boiler, and from previous posts, BG seem to have a reputation for 'selling' new boilers on the back of Can't-get-the spares advice to customers.
Ask BG which part has failed and if they won't answer, get a local Independant guy to look at the boiler. He will be able to tell you what part has failed, it's price, where to get it and his price for the work - Write to BG advising them that if they don't fix the boiler within 7 days, you will have the local contractor repair it and you will send them the bill0 -
Just rang British Gas, and they said the engineer didn't mention a part number but said its a pipe that goes from the regulator. Seems they dont deal with the boiler companies but they source their parts from their own supplier. Have insisted they send the same engineer back today to tell me exactly what needs replacing.
I was out when he came last time and my boyfriend just believed everything he was told - I'm not so feeble lol
Thanks for the replies

Hi jus71 - Note down the Make and Model number of your boiler, then phone the Manufacturer or Main Agents - The number will be on their web site - and ask if there are any spare parts for that boiler that are not available. i.e Everything else is.
Also look up their nearest stockist and note their phone number & address
When the BG arrives and names the faulty part, if it's not on your list of Unavailble Parts, you tell him that it is available and where he can get it0 -

Just look on the engineers computer, if the part is not listed he should get in touch with the parts desk at bg who will make efforts to locate one.
Bg only declare a part as obsolete or unobtainable when advised by the manufacturers.0 -

He rang the parts desk and they rang glow worm who said it wasnt available anymore. What has got me mad is that the part may have lasted a lot longer if it wasnt for this flush. They just said 'yes our powerflush caused this but nothing we can do you'll need a new boiler' grr!0 -
Hi jus71 - Don't just accept this 3rd hand information that spares are not available for your boiler, get onto Glow Worm and check it for yourself.0
