who sets amazon postage prices for mps?

I had to buy a very small item last night from a market place seller that weighs only around 100g. I needed it urgently so opted for the express delivery (special delivery) and was shocked to see it was set at £9.95. Now i had no choice but to pay this as it's the only seller i could find in the uk.
I'm quite prepared to pay it and not moaning about it after buying but it's a tad over the top for something so small (should be £5 according to rm site) so wondered if it was in fact the seller setting the postage charge or amazon?
I've read somewhere that amazon sets the postage prices so the seller might not realise/do much about it?

Amazon set it. I sold a book for £20 the buyer then pays £2.75 postage... It should be £22.75 for me...nope i got £17.00 and had to buy postage out of that which cost £4.00 so out of £22.75 i get(after postage) £13!
Seller dosnt see the postage costs but forks out for themselves

I believe that in some categories, some sellers can set their own postage - certainly not in books, DVDs or CDs so depends on the item and the category.

I think it's to do with the seller's status. If I'm getting this right - maybe Soo could help as I only buy on Amazon, not sell - some larger sellers have the privilege of setting their own postage rates.

Just a bit annoyed with Amazon myself at the moment. Normally everything works well, but bought two books which I thought were postage inclusive and then when I got the after-sale email realised the price was exclusive, which meant it wasn't such a good deal as I thought. Nevertheless, the books turned up promptly and were both brand new, whereas I thought I was just buying penny copies which would be pre-loved - so maybe not as bad as I thought.

I fully agree about Amazon's pricings though. If they weren't such a good site and always delivered on time and in better condition than most things that come off eBay, I would have been put off a long time ago. I do, however, find that Amazon sellers are held to much higher standards than eBay sellers and have always delivered the goods. I also buy a lot of stuff from the Marketplace sellers and thus support the third-party section of the site quite a bit. While I wouldn't always recommend eBay for stuff other than a few areas of interest, I would always direct people to Amazon; I've had a lot of luck with electronics items in the past whereas things have been very hit and miss with eBay electronics.

Amazon are good in the fact that if i order something expensive(or anything ) and it dosnt arrive theyll refund me pretty quick. They seem to take on the responsiblity.

Amazon set the postage on my selling account. Was very irritated recently when they charged £2.75 for a book that cost me £4.50 to post. I e mailed them for a whinge but the response was 'tough' basically. I have noticed though that stuff isn't shifting like it used to on there.
