University Professor too daft to take backups

This guy was lucky when a laptop with ten years of data was stolen. The thief sent him his data on a USB stick.
A thief stole the laptop of a university professor, and then returned the contents on a USB memory stick.

The professor....was devastated when ten years of work stored on his laptop was stolen.

But to his surprise, a week after the theft, the entire contents of his laptop were posted to him on a USB stick.

"Unfortunately, I have been bad at backing up my computer."..
There is bad and there is not backing up for ten years.

I really do despair at the stupidity of supposedly intelligent people.

Although perhaps he had taken some back ups.

It's not stupidity, it's just a lack of organisation and foresight.

Stupid is as stupid does. Whatever that means.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

And to my surprise, the story doesn't seem to be an urban legend on Snopes...

I used to work for one of the UK's largest FE college's, in IT Support, and I can sadly tell you this isn't an isolated case. Of course, when all that data gets lost in whatever manner it's always the fault of the techies for not running around, chasing laptops to back up for the poor unfortunate souls who can't be bothered to stick their files on their server space where it will be backed up automatically.

I could tell you some stories, in fact, once upon a time I had a website with some of the more 'interesting' requests on there. Obviously, names removed to protect the foolish.

Well, Albert Einstein was reputed to be absent-minded with regard to everyday practicalities, so I suppose that puts the Prof in good company....

What makes you think University professors are intelligent?

I've come across many too thick to work out how to change a wheel or a battery. Whilst they're undoubtedly good in their own field, they're usually no use outside of it. Most are incapable of changing a tap washer.
