Parked Domains

Does anyone do this or know anything about it? I have been researching it for the last couple of hours. I have been trying to find domains that haven't been taken that would generate a lot of traffic, such as typing mistakes etc. and using google adsense's parked domain tool. Apparently it can be abit of an earner.

Cheers :T

  • It can be a good earner, but from what I've read about it, you're going about it the wrong way.

Not saying domains with spelling mistakes won't work, but from what I understand it's not the way most high earners make their money.

Most seem to earn from expiring domains; every day, owners of existing websites choose not to renew their domains. These are listed in google, often highly ranked, and therefore people are still coming across these domains when searching. Only difference is, instead of the website they expect, they get your ad-filled page instead.

Going down the expired domains route, it's very competitive, and very difficult to get the best domains, unless you have a lot of time on your hands, to snatch them as soon as they expire. Even then, many people use expensive tools which check for expiring domains in advance, and snatch them literally the second they become available.

Interesting... typo mistakes on domain names was just an idea. Have been looking at other stuff that is a keyword thats searched alot etc etc. Im guessing I have no chance at all with snatching expired domains?
  • I wouldn't say no chance. But from what I have read about it (I have no actual experience of this, I looked into it some time ago, but that's all) you need to invest in expiring domain checker software, and a tool to snatch domains, if you want to make any real cash.

But there are three types of people making money on the Internet:
    1. Those who copy what others are doing, who will always have strong competition
    2. Those who put a new spin on an existing idea
    3. Those who find brand new ways of making money.
Just because others aren't doing it, doesn't necessarily mean it's not profitable.

However, in this case, I highly doubt it would very profitable. It's just too similar to what others are already doing (expiring domains, and making money from buying items from mis-spelled ebay auctions) that I'd be surprised if it hasn't already been tried.

Thanks for the info. I've got a list of possible domains that are available, some are things which are in early development, or games not released yet or are going to be released, same with films etc. And looking at google keyword tool some of these domains keywords have 700,000 searches a month. Would it be worth trying it?
  • If they have 700,000 searches, then definitely worth a go, depending on how competitive the search term is.

If it's competitive, then you're not going to get anywhere near page 1 of the search results, without building an optimised site, so you would be relying on people typing in your domain manually. Something like 70% of all traffic comes from search engines if memory serves, so you would be limiting your traffic (and therefore profit) considerably.

But if the search term is not very competitive, then the domain name and a good title would more or less be enough to secure a high ranking for that term (and therefore a decent amount of traffic).

Buying domains for films/games/etc which are likely to be popular in the future is supposed to be very profitable, so you might be onto a winner there. Not sure how it works (whether you contact prospective buyers such as movie studios, or wait for them to contact you), but I'm sure there will be plenty of guides around.

Thankyou for the info. The 700k one is low competition, but its for a mobile phone which is being released soon. The only thing stopping me is that in a year or so, not many people will be searching for that mobile phone any more if you get me.

be careful you don't get done for domain-squatting

Well, I purchased a domain for a website idea I came up with that I believe is a fantastic idea. Parked the domain for now until I get the website up and running.

Your better off setting up a quick wordpress blog on the domain and popping google ads on there!

It's funny you mentioned that Bigbase, I just came across that on google and it does seem like a better idea. The thing is the website is primarily about a social networking site (no not facebook), so I am not sure adsense would have many relevant ads? Is there any way of finding an indication of how many adverts are on adsense for a certain keyword tool?

EDIT: Doh, answered my own question there, you can use google's keyword tool and traffic estimator cant you?
