I have a Flip Mino HD which is a small, fixed lens auto focus and pocket size. It has very good picture and sound quality and can be connected directly to the HDMI port on a HD TV. Its inbuilt battery last for 2 hrs. It is not a full blown, all bells and whistles camcorder by any means but serves its designed simple readily accessible use with ease.
The recorded video can be downloaded to my PC computer via USB port and either edited with its own inbuilt Flip share software or fully edited with 3rd party software such as Corel video studio X3.
I also own a “normal fist hold “camcorder however I much prefer the Mino. If you should consider the Mino, Flip have just upgrade it with better anti shake.

Excellent advice, I'll pop into a local shop to have a play before I commit the funds :)

I have a Mino hd and a Kodak ZX1 -similar except it uses sd cards instead of built in memory and ZX1 also uses AA batteries -even comes with 2 rechargables and charger! The Kodak can take stills as well and can record in 3 different qualities. The mino only charges it's built in battery from a USB port . Can get ZX1 for about £50(amazon) -Mino was a clearance deal. I prefer the zx1- both take great 720p hd in daylight but aren't so brilliant indoors.
The thing with these is that they are so easy and convenient to use that you will use them far more than a bigger ,more expensive, dedicated camcorder. Both come with cables for connect to tv and both are designed for easy uploading
