Npower prepay gas meter issue

I was recently made redundant and had to switch to prepayment meters as i couldn't afford the direct debit's. When they fitted it they put £12 credit on and i accidently set a budget of £8, which held £4 back.
I've just realised that the £4 is still there and i can't seem to access
The instructions for the meter says to press the black button to see the budget and then insert the card to access it, erm after a million attempts it's not happening!
I do have credit on my meter currently but with the weather getting so cold an extra £4 wont hardly go amiss, i was wondering if anyone can shed any light onto what i'm doing wrong, before i have to have a costly phonecall to n power.
Thanks

Put the card in and press the red button. It may need to be out of credit for this to work.
And you've learnt lesson 1 - never press the [STRIKE]red [/STRIKE] black button!0 -

Cheers for the help i'll give it a go when it runs out of credit because it doesn't work when there's credit on there.
As for never pressing the Black button, yup lesson learnt!0
