Why would he need a "proper explanation" ? They would like him to work for them but they can't accomodate his shift requirements, what else would he like them to say ?
Tell him to phone them and say that he would like them to keep him on their records and to let him know if any suitable shifts become available. In the meantime, tell him to keep applying for other jobs.0 -
The test isn't really that hard, and it isn't about knowing procedures... I can't really remember all the questions but you should just try and be a good person and provide good service and choose answers based on that.
I did the test for a driving role and remember questions like "you have observed an accident what should you do?"
a) continue with your route, wouldn't want to be late...
b) pull over somewhere safe and go to help
c) pull over and call your manager
A new customer has ordered groceries for the first time, they've had to certify when ordering that there are no more than 2 flights of stairs to climb. You arrive and the customer is on the 4th floor, the lift is broken and they struggle with the stairs. Do you
a) Dump the groceries on the 2nd floor landing
b) Tell the customer you won't deliver their groceries and get on with your route
c) Bring the groceries up but explain to the customer that they'll need to arrange for a neighbour to help get them from the 2nd floor next time if the lift isn't fixed
Things like that... Just don't be a !!!!!! and I'm sure the answers will become obvious, no need for an economics MSc, just some common sense and a focus on customer service.
Edit: oh I see how old the original issue is. What hours were advertised for the role originally applied for? Their adverts I've seen are normally really clear about what shifts are required.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

I would have thought that it was perfectly reasonable to expect that the store and HR were sure that the role and hours discussed at interview were available BEFORE an offer of employment. He did not ask for something that was not on offer or for them to accommodate some other shift pattern.0

I did one of these tests for KFC, which I passed (obviously, as I now work there), I would say that most questions are common sense0

I've passed a few of these but I've tried twice on the Travelodge website and failed both times due to " your motivation". They were they kind of questions were you're given a statement and need to choose which is most like you and least like you. There's not many questions but they get difficult and make it almost impossible for yourself to sound good.0

At one of the places I used to work, one of the cell leader's wives was a manager at one of the main supermarkets. She was more than happy to provide a sheet detailing what answers would get you throufg to interview.
So in some cases it is not what you know, but who you know.Never Knowingly Understood.

My background. I have a BA in Economics, MSc in Economics (top 5 UK school), 10 years out of Uni, live in 550k home, am Managing Director of my own firm and make 105k per year.
perhaps you should have left the application form to your mrs...do you think a 20k line manager wants someone who can think better than them?

Granny is getting her head kicked in by a thug, you are 10 mins behind target in your deliveries, do you:
A) drive past and try to catch up on your job sheetprotect her and bring her home for a cup of tea
Supplier has finally harvested several tonnes of perishable fruit, price agreed last year, do you:
A)say thanks, here's your payment and let's load up nowinsist on renegotiating the contract with another 15 percent discount and 3 months credit otherwise the fruit will rot.
Local superstore 'accidentally' built 20 percent bigger than planning permission, do you:
A) re-apply for larger planning permission or agree to alter buildinggive the council planners a backhander and tell them any nonsense and it is a house of lord appeal that will clear the council funds out £££££
Petrol forecourt gets caught by trading standards for dispensing fuel well under the correct measure, do you:
A) refund all customers over the last 2 years and order an internal investigation into pump calibration, blame the manufacturers.Admit there is no way fuel can go missing, too many checks and measures now. Sorry we were cheating you, but thanks for your money, now fark off.

"I know the roads of Lancashire well" and "professional driver" tells me you've been a taxi driver and your inability to answer the questions above supports that TBH. I've been a proper professional driver for over 16 years. I know the roads OF THE ENTIRE UK well.
Sales of Goods Act is not relevant. If you apply for a cashier or driver position at Sainsbury's you do not have the authority to issue a refund, or to make a decision whether a refund can be given. You do not use common sense. You follow company policy. The correct thing to do is call for management who is authorised to handle refunds.0 -

Yes - but he applied for a job that was advertised as involving evening hours and weekends.
Sainsburys offered him a job and then changed the goalposts by wanting him to work days when he is still at school.
What a waste of time and money on Sainsburys' part. Arranging all these interviews, etc when they should have just checked the application properly in the first place and/or not changed their mind as to what hours they want their new employees to work.0
