What Share give Dividend?

Hi All,

I wanted to know from your experiance which shares give good dividend every 6 months or so?

Comments

  • I bought into Vodaphone recently as they will be increasing their divi to 6/7% next year. Other ones i hold with good dividends include aviva and rsa insurance.

I would avoid bank stocks as even tho hsbc and santander pay high amounts there are safer investments.
  • wow Man Group pay 10%..whats the catch??!

Man Group won't be paying the same level of dividend next year.

The yield % you need to look at is the 'Forecast yield', not historical yields. And take them with a pinch of salt, too...

BT Group have been fairly reliable since 2001 for a dividend every 6 months - I inherited my Mother's holding, which started at 524 shares in 2001, and with the dividend converted to additional shares, added an average of 16 shares every 6 months, to a tally of 760 or so in 2009. Dividends ranged from a high of 40 shares, to a low of 6.

In cash terms, therefore, if you held these shares, you could be looking at a cash dividend at today's share price of around £1.50 of anywhere from (6 * 1.50) to (40 * 1.50) = £9 to £60 every 6 months.

Rolls-Royce has also been a consistent dividend earner, giving between 3 and 13 shares every 6 months from a start of 227 shares in 2003, to a tally of 285 in 2009.

    In cash terms, today's price £6.28, so (3*6.26) to (13*6.28) = £18.84 to £81.64 every 6 months

A higher shareholding than either of the starting points above will gain you a higher dividend, of course.

Here is their FTSE All Share Forcasts sorted by yield.

However do treat this with extreme caution. There is usually a reason the top paying yields are so high - it is because nobody wants to buy their shares. For example HMV is top of that list at 15% because many people think they are in terminal decline. Personally I have bought them as a high risk, high return stock but you have to be prepared to risk losing your money if you want to do the same.
