BT Share Certifcate advice

Options
Hi
My mother in law has had shares with bt for years and has now transfered them into my husbands name.

We now have a BT share certificate saying we have 374 shares orginal share cost of 5p.

If we decide to sell the shares will we get the price of the shares today.

Also if we decide to sell how do we do it.

Thanks in advance.

By coincidence I have today sold a small number of inherited BT shares.
The cheapest way I found was to open an Interactive Investor account. Then print off the two forms needed (Share Transfer and Crest) and send these in together with the certificate.
When the shares are registered in your online account, you can just sell them straight away, or watch the market for a bit and try and guess whether it is going to go up or down.
You can sell then instantly at the touch of a button, and either leave the proceeds in your account or withdraw it to your nominated bank account.

But be warned - like gambling or eBay, it's addictive! :)

I inherited some shares a while back, I opened a account with Share centre and sent them the cert of shares and about 7 days later I could sell them.

    Its quite easy

The registrar (Equiniti or Computershare) who transferred them should be able to sell them for you, but may charge to do so.

If you sell them today, the share price is currently around the £1.50 mark, so your shares are worth (374 *1.50) = £560 approx

However, they're usually fairly reliable for a dividend every 6 months - I inherited my Mother's holding, which started at 524 shares in 2001, and with the dividend converted to additional shares, added an average of 16 shares every 6 months, to a tally of 760 or so in 2009. Dividends ranged from a high of 40 shares, to a low of 6.

In cash terms, therefore, if you hold these shares, you could be looking at a cash dividend of anywhere from (6 * 1.50) to (40 * 1.50) = £9 to £60 every 6 months.

Up to you to decide whether that's a worthwhile holding or not

denise070 - The 5p is just a nominal figure bearing no relationship to the value of the shares.

You will get the current price which as I write is £1.48 per share so your shares are worth approx. £553 less dealing commission.

As you have the certificate with your shareholder's reference on it, the easiest [if not actually the cheapest] way to sell them immediately online or by telephone would be to use BT's registrar's online dealing service without having to register or sign up with anybody. The commission for your sale would be £25 online or £30 by telephone. The online system may look a bit scary at first but you get an instant quote which you have a limited time to accept or it expires. You can then get another quote straight away and so can see how it works without committing yourself. Otherwise you can do it by phone at slightly greater cost.

Have a look at this, which is the share dealing site of Equiniti [BT's registrar] which may be of interest -

Edit: Just seen googler's post which is pointing you in the same direction if you want to sell.
