EMA to go?

Options
Anyone know what the government has planned for ema? Sounds like it is to be scrapped and only the pupils who get free dinners will get it? Can anyone confirm when and what is going to happen? Please! I'm concerned as my son relies on his ema to pay for the extra's that his courses require!

In 2013(?) when young people have to remain in education and training until 18 there will be no need for the inducement of EMA. AFAIK it won't be going immediately.

I hope it does go as I found it very unfair when I was in Sixth Form.

The thought that students actually spend this money on books is rather laughable! Extra bonus at xmas, wonder what that gets spent on?

I didn't get EMA as parents income was over the limit, but that doesn't mean they give me £30 a week. I instead had to work 4 hours as a paperound boy to earn this money, while they had an easy life. So not fair :(

I've just set the cat amongst the pigeons - I rang the ema helpline to ask them what was happening, and they hadn't heard anything and the young lady I spoke to was obviously very upset and shocked at the news! OOOOOpppppss!

He declared that EMA will be replaced with more targeted support. That's all he said today and could mean 1001 things.

Bonuses are no longer payable with EMA, they were removed by Labour (shouldn't have been paid in the first place!).

I think the money could be far better spent directly on cheaper transport for college kids and they can be given materials/books etc from the colleges. Rather than lunches and PAYG credit (which my DD does, along with saving £10 a week).

indeed. i had EMA though i know for sure if i didnt recieve it my mum certainly wouldnt have give me £30 a week! i also had a job though so the EMA got spent on my bus pass and lunch, not books so much.

madmonk: i wouldnt worry so much about your son...i dont see it being scrapped immediatly or certainly those in current reciet of it being cut off mid-term (the applications for next academic year may be scrapped though) so perhaps if the date gets confirmed you and your son can use the money this year to save up for next year if he'll still need it then?
