External monitor on laptop

Been using an external monitor on my 5-6 year old laptop for last couple of years now, it's been fine. Until this week. The monitor won't recognise any connection, I've tried different cable and an lcd tv without success and haven't changed any settings so assume it's the vga port on the computer at fault.

There's little of value on the laptop and given its age I'm loathe to pay for repairs, but is there a way to access the harddrive or even get a display somehow?

have you pressed the key combination to toggle the external output?

presumably the inbuilt screen is faulty?

2.5" usb hard disk caddy, around £3 will get the data

  • if you can connect your computer to a network, you can potentially access it through the back door (ie - sharing files and folder, or using terminal services) this will allow you to get access back at your files. Otherwise the usb hard disk caddy is the way to go.
