dual channel pvr, humax, topfield, panasonic etc.make sure you get a hd compatible model if you want high def. A single channel will also do the job, record on pvr, and watch the other live channel on the tv

Just as with analogue, your TV has 1 tuner, so you're stuck with that. If you wanted to record something, you bought a VCR, which contained a tuner too. Thus you could watch one/record one wit your 2 tuners.
If you get a Freeview recorder, as above, and it's dual tuner, you should be able to record 2 things at the same time whilst watching a 3rd channel on your TV.

It's worth pointing out that some dual channel tuners allow you to record two channels and watch a third without having to use the TV tuner, as long as the watched programme is on the same multiplex as one of those being recorded. All Humax machines can do this.

If you go to this website you can compare the features of all available makes and models side by side.

Humax and Topfield models have been out for some time now and are being heavily discounted. Discussion on various forums suggest that new models are about to be released.

If you have a VCR and want cheap option a set top box should work.
