Selling mobile - pitfalls to avoid please

Hi everyone

I'm planning on selling my new mobile upgrade on ebay and I'm looking for some advice. Should I open the box to check the contents or is it better to sell with seal intact. I'm with vodafone so will the phone be locked to vodafone or should I try various sims to see if they work?

Also could anyone advise on any pitfalls to avoid as I don't want to end up being scammed. I've only ever sold clothes on ebay. Should I accept paypal? In what circumstances can they claim the money back from paypal. Whats the difference between verified and unverified address? Should I specify only verified? Should I also put a buy it now price?

Sorry for being such a novice but any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

  • I would open it to check that it is all there and as Laura suggested so that you can take pictures.

Set your buyer requirements. Block all overseas bidders. Only send a mobile phone to buyers within the UK and send it special delivery. There are other buyer requirements that you can add, have a look through the list.

Whatever you do, never agree to post to Nigeria or post to any other address other than the one stated on PayPal.

Also if getting paid by paypal make sure that the address you are sending to is a 'confirmed' address or you will lose your buyer protection.
  • Don't reveal your email address as you can get 'Spoof' emails, claiming to be from ebay or paypal when they are not.

They suggest that paypal will hold the funds until you provide a tracking number. Paypal DON'T do that.

If you reply to a message ensure you tick the box to hide your email address.

Take a note of the phones IMEI number. Only send to a confirmed paypal address and send special delivery.

Under no circumstances allow overseas bidders as phones over £32 are not covered for loss or damage by the Royal mail. Set your seller preferences and your auction to clearly allow UK only bidders.

Although some will disagree to stop scammers have it on BIN with immediate payment required helps stop those pesky Nigerian bidders.
  • What make and model of phone is it, as www.envirofone.com pay good rates for phones sent for recycling.

    Examples

    Sony Ericsson W550i - £57.12
    Nokia 6230i - £51.61
    Nokia 6630 - £34.00

This may be good for some people, you choose cash or argos vouchers. I am sure Martin mentioned this before.

If poss take a Picture of the IMEI as well as noting it down.
You can't dispute photographic evidence should a horror arise (I'm sure It won't - don't worry)
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.
