  • Thanks Excel 1966. I did wonder if I was doing more damage by applying for a few in fast sucesssion.

Yes, it is genuine. I'm just trying to get myself out of the hole I got into by stupid partying etc in my early 20's!!!! :-( My own fault, I now.

Ok, so maybe the best thing to do, is stop applying & just concentrate on paying off my Virgin card. I do have a £2k overdraft limit which I am always in, so maybe that doesn't help either. I only earn £19k, but am looking for a new job, so hopefully one will come up that pays better.

    Thanks
  • Just FYI, when I first got my egg card I had a fairly low limit - think it was about £1000, but they've put it up and up and up and I now have a £6000 limit. It seems in my experience quite often the slightly more cautious lenders give you a lower limit than you want, but as long as you make repayments on time every month they will increase your limit without you having to ask. When egg increased mine I was able to transfer my rather large overdraft onto it with a 0% transfer offer they were doing at the time (they do it every now and then for existing customers).

MBNA are normally the most generous when it comes to credit limits.

This has been my experience too. My limit got to £23,500 before I applied for a second MBNA card. I got a low limit on that, rang them up and cancelled the £23,500 card so I could have a higher limit on the new card. I requested £6000 on that (didn't need the rest, and was concerned it might reduce my chances of getting other cards). They agreed, but within a couple of years the limit increased to £19,000 as of a year or so ago. Didn't bother rejecting the increases as I was getting some pretty good offers from MBNA.

Barclays/Natwest have been the next most generous. £10K to £12K (have cancelled and reapplied a couple of times).
