Welcome to the MSE forums rebeccad118

Yes, you need to keep a landline for any ADSL broadband to work.

However, unless you have multiroom*, you do not need your Sky receiver connected to a landline (all Sky progamming and software updates are delivered via satellite signals).

    * If you do have multiroom, all receivers must be permanently connected to the same landline in order for you to benefit from the £10/month reduced subscription.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • As Heinz says...

The only way to get rid of your landline and keep a broadband service is to have cable - which means you can opt for broadband and optionally TV but no landline. That said, believe there's a reduction in the package fees if you do take a landline as well, so the saving isn't as great as you might imagine.

A bigger saving would be to get rid of the Sky TV and have a Freeview box instead, no landline, and have cable broadband only or 3G broadband.

These rely on you being able to get cable where you are, or, being able to get a decent 3G internet service where you are that suffices for what you need - many people can't get it at any reasonable speed.

With cable broadband, you could have a VOIP service to replace a landline service so you could still have a "home phone number" both inbound and outbound. You can do it with 3G but it doesn't have the "always on" aspect and while it works for us since we get about 3Mbps over 3G, it might not work well enough to be usable where you are.
