Its a case of having to Altarf, it doesnt take much to wash the nappies, the machine does it after all! MOST people in this country do have a washing machine. Other European countries are much better than us at recycling and they have people in difficult circumstances too!

NO! I do not have a car ...will never be medically able to drive ...that is the whole crux of my post. I pay my way ...take my rubbish away!

It is also having drying facilities and time, but that is not the point. The point is why do 'greens' arrogantly assume that that their lifestyle choice is suitable for everyone else, without knowing anything about them.

We have our bins emptied weekly. They just take different rubbish at different times. Normal household rubbish fortnightly. On the same day they collect tins and glass. The opposite week they empty the green bin garden refuge only. Also cardboard and newspapers/magazines. Any old good condition clothing. The problem is most of the time the cardboard isn't collected and the glass and tins are often left.
Teenagers love it as they then have missiles.
We end up going to the local tip every weekend now.
I agree totaly with recycling. Just doesn't seem to be working out for people. Also it is difficult to know where to store it when you live in a tiny house.
Maybe we need to go back to the food companies and stop then using so much packaging.

  • Not having lived in the UK for a few years I was a little concerned when I found out my new council only does alternate fortnightly collection, black household wheelie bin one week, green recycling wheelie bin and 2 recycling boxes the other.

What did I do? I read through the leaflets supplied by the council and have to say it's a doddle. Green wheelie I can put garden cuttings, cardboard, cooked food and peelings. Recycling boxes for newspaper, magazines, glass jars and junk mail/envelopes.

This week my black wheelie was just over half full, the green one is full now and they don't empty it until next tuesday, do you think I could get another one FOC for being so green???

Admittedly I don't have children in nappies now, but there's no reason why the great British public can't give this a go, it's not very difficult or anymore time consuming.

This is exactly my point! MissSunshine sees no problem in recycling as her council collects almost everything by the sound of it, which is great. But other councils don't and it is wrong to act high-and-mighty about how 'green' you are when it is so much harder for others to access recycling facilities.

Wasn't being 'high and mighty', just explaining how it works in my area and how I get frustrated with people saying they don't have the time.

My parents council still does weekly household collections with fortnightly green collections, they take the same as my council except cooked food/peelings, yet some of the household bins are fit to bursting every week. None of the familes have more than 2 adults and 3 children and everyone has at least 1 car, so that IMHO is just laziness.

Even if my council weren't so green I'd still do my bit by taking it to recycling centres whilst on my way to somewhere else so as not to waste fuel. I appreciate not everyone has a car and for those who aren't getting a similar service to my area, then they should lobby their council to do something about it.

And it is that sort of arrogant attitude that gets right up people's noses. You may have the time and facilities to be able to use washables, but do you know the circumstances of the mothers on the TV. No, but you will scream your views anyway.

Actually we did learn something of their circumstances...they were both living in large houses with gardens & clearly visable washing lines. One said she was a stay at home mum the other didn't give any indication but my point is they were talking like there is no alternative to using disposable nappies when there clearly is. And more importantly, they were making their disposable nappies someone elses problem by expecting the council to deal with them rather than taking responsibilty for themselves and their actions.

I am sorry if I have got up your nose but but I would rather be considered arrogant for my (marginally more than your) informed point of view than be demonstratabley rude by calling others arrogant.

We have had fortnightly collection of rubbish for several years, they collect recyclable stuff like jars, bottles and cans on the 2nd week. They should collect paper too but almost always forget our road so we sort that out ourselves now.

We were quite worried at first but we really haven't had a problem to be honest.

You are still missing the point. You have decided from a short news piece that someone should live their life in a particular way. A way that they have decided is not suitable for them. And you scream those views at the TV. Arrogant? Well if the cap fits...
