can daughter get housing benefit while on maternity leave?

My daughter is due to have her first baby in February 2011. She lives with her partner but isn't married to him.
She hopes to take the maximum time off work on maternity leave which she understands to be a year, but will get full salary for three months, then half for a couple of months, then nothing for the remainder of the maternity leave.
She expects to live off her partner's salary plus their modest savings during the unpaid leave.
Her rent is £700 per month, and council tax of around £200 per month. A friend suggested to her that she may be entitled to some benefits, such as housing benefit etc., during the unpaid leave. She has always worked full time and has no knowledge of benefits.
Would there be a possibility that she may be able to claim anything till she goes back to work?
Thanks.

It depends on her income, that of her partner and amount of eligible rent (based on how many rooms the law says they need, etc)Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I hope so, it would be so wonderful for her to take a year out and for us tax payers to fund her life style choice. :TBe happy, it's the greatest wealth0 -
not really a nice comment to make welsh.
like someone has already said it depends on the family income, my partner is on maternity leave but after 3 months off with full pay she now has maternity pay at 120 quid a week.
plus she will also get taz credits and child tax credit aslo with bay element aswell.
they take all this into account when they make a calculation, we do get a bit of help but not much.
dont listen to the person comments, im sure they would do the same if they had new baby and wanted to be at home to bond with it and not to dump on people or send to childminder.
first year of baby life very importnat even more if first.
there are rent and benefit calculators online as a rough guide0 -
