Plugging in phone line (Sky) slows internet down

Hopefully someone can help. Sky don't seem to have the answer!

Every time I plug the phone lead from the Sky box into the wall it makes my internet connection slow down to a snails pace. I really can't get my head around why this is. Could it be because my Modem and actual phone is plugged into another socket in another part of the room?

I know you don't need to keep the phone line from the box connected but it makes things easier and stops that annoying message you get every time you boot up without having the lead connected.

Hope this isn't too confusing and someone can help.

Thanks!

How many other things do you have plugged into phone sockets? You've got at least one phone and the Sky box so what else?

You're getting the message about a phone line being disconnected - are you turning it off at the wall all the time? WHY? The only time I ever get that message is after coming back from hols or if there's a power cut.

I sometimes get the poxy message even when I turn on from Standy. I used to turn off at wall but not any more.

We have about 4 phone sockets. We only have a phone and modem plugged into one and nothing in the others.

You do have an ADSL filter between the Sky box and the socket, don't you?
All active extensions require ADSL filters, and that socket is active because the Sky box is (as far as BT are concerned), a modem.

That being the white box type connector that plugs into the socket (with Modem and Phone written on it or something like that?)

Yes, and as suggested, you do need one on a Sky Receiver that is connected to a phone line.
  • You would definitely need a filter between your sky box and the telephone line, something like this

Shouldnt be more than a quid or so on ebay.

Cheers lads, I had a spare one. When the Sky fella set it up he put a different filter in. Now I have swapped it over it's fine.

    Thanks again.

(Has anyone seen that Sky offer about the Box Office film and free £10 M&S voucher by the way? Thats the main reason I thought about it again).

No but I signed up with them in July using topcashback and got a £50 M&S voucher AND £145 cash via the cashback site commission (paid out last month too) :)

Not seen a better offer than that anywhere, although I think the cashback amount is closer to £100 now :/

So you contacted Sky tech support and they didn't even ask you to swap the filter, or if you even had one fitted? Incredible.
    Glad it's sorted.

They didn't mention it! Another small problem we have, but it doesn't matter to much is that if we try to connect a second phone anywhere in the flat (either bedroom) it makes an annoying buzzing sound. Anyone have any ideas? I tried the filter option again but it made no difference.

I want a second phone in the bedroom so she doesn't have to bore me when ringing people!
