If you claim tax credits, you need to tell them that a) your son now receives DLA care - this will give you a disability premium & b) you now claim carers allowance - this could affect the amount of tax credits you get.

Hi My son Thomas gets high rate care and mobility dla, he gets an extra amount of tax credits because of this your son will get the top up amount amount because he gets middle rate, carers is classed as income and will have to be declared to people like DWP and housing and council tax and they will work out all your money coming in and out of your home and adjust your benefits accordingly

  • DLA will not be affected as its for your son. CA would be for you. if you arent working and get CA, you can top it up with IS which means you get full council tax benefit and some housing beneft. And yes, make sure you get them to backdate CA and IS if relevant! Every penny counts!

    Good Luck :-)

IS is dependent upon household income. CA does not automatically entitle you to IS.
