Could anyone tell me when do you actually tell utility companies etc about leaving your old house and moving into a house you have bought?
The contracts have not been exchanged yet (buying and selling)

Hi -
You can ring up your utility companies and let them know you're planning to move without yet having a completion date. They may give you useful information like if you will have to give a minimum amount of notice. e.g. for a pay monthly telephone/internet contract that you are NOT planning to move to your new house, you may have to give a month's notice.
You can have it disconnected at any time but you will have to pay for the whole month and not a part month in this case. (e.g. billed from the 1st of the month - if you move out on the 19th you'll still have to pay for the whole month)
Unless you don't know what contract you are on for utility bills, I'd say leave it until you have exchanged and have an agreed completion date - then ring them. Utility suppliers are suprisingly trusting and take your word for dates that you move in / out of a house!
Don't forget to read the meters when you go and when you move in.....

Semi-hijacking your thread McKneff
Any advice for FTB as how to arrange the utilities?
I've checked out uswitch and other online support, but they all seem to refer to switcing services rather than starting up a new account.
Thanks

Ring the current suppliers and tell them who you are but that you don't want a tied in contract, just a month by month bill. Then contact the supplier you really want and switch.0 -

Current vendor is with Southern Electric, so I should just call them? Do I need to provide any info other than expected completion date? I suspect the vendor has already called them
Would I do the same for water too?

Just a word of warning; do check your final bill.
I telephoned the electric co with a final meter reading on the day I moved out, but in all the upheaval didn’t realise until around twelve months later when clearing up old paperwork that I had been overcharged by about £80
I rang them and was told that they used the meter reading provided by the new occupier, which turned out to be incorrect. Despite the fact that the electric co. were aware of the error, they had simply held the ‘credit’ on my closed account.0 -

Yep, its really easy. Ring current supplier, give them your details and your completion date, make sure they don't tie you in to a 12 month contract, then shop around for who actually want to supply you and switch. The switch takes a while so you might have to pay the current supplier the first few bills.
Water is even easier, you just ring whoever the 'water board' is in your area and tell them who you are.
Provide a meter reading for both if possible.0 -
For any utilities just call then on the day you move in and give them the meter readings. Nothing more needs to be done.0

I think there is enough to be done on moving day without worrying about switching. Do that after everything is sorted.0
