New York for Xmas and New Year

Hi all
I could do with some help planning a holiday to America, as you can see its a bit last minute as would like to go this year! (Was originally looking at cheaper beach hols but thought might be nice to push the boat out and do something different!)
I have only ever gone on package holidays, and trying to plan this seems quite difficult, as companies such as Virgin are more than we wanted to spend.
Any one got any advice or hotels they could recommend staying?
If we go for two weeks would it be best to change hotels and stay in different locations, or would we be best to stay put once we find somewhere suitable?
Thanks for any help

I've been at this time and it was freezing cold and horrible, Spring and Autumn are much much better.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

I wouldn't got to NYC for Xmas. Anyone there with any sense leaves town. Worst case scenario is you end up in a snow storm unable to leave your hotel for a few days or get stuck at the airport.
Try somewhere warmer0 -

i do not see new york at xmas as a problem it would be nice to see the place with a snow covering and the lights up obviously everyone is different some people like the snow/cold some dont. Also i think they can cope with some snow as it happens every year i do not see you getting snowed in or anything like that.Problems like that only happen in UK.
as for recommendations for hotels it all depends on what part of nyc you want to stay and also what your budget is,i stayed at sheraton hotel and towers a few years back which is 5 mins from times square pricey but nice, last week i stayed at MAve hotel on madison avenue corner of 27th in the flatiron district nice location away from hustle and bustle but with easy access to all attractions 15 mins walk to Times square short walk to ESB and subways very close.that hotel was a reasonable £820 6 nights for 2 adults and child bed and conti breakfast.
personally i think 2 weeks in NYC is too much i have just had 6 days there and that is plenty.
you say you would like to push boat out and also originally looking at beach holidays?
What about a week in NYC then a week in the carribean somewhere? does not take long to get from new york to one of the islands.0 -
I went to NYC beginning of December last year, it was freezing! When you're walking lots, are in & out of shops, it's not too bad.. but when it gets late and dark & you still want to explore, it makes you look forward to getting back to the hotel & into bed haha
We went up the Empire State and it was pouring with rain and so windy up there, couldn't stand out to enjoy the view/take pics for long as felt numb to the bone!
Still had a great time & it didn't rain every day.. but when i return it will def be spring time.. xx0 -
Hi
We went 12 - 19 December 09 and it was amazing.
We stayed at the Affinia Manhattan which is ideal for being centrally located. I could lie on my bed and look at the Empire State Building.
We did take thermal underwear as we were told it would be cold. There was only 1 day when it did turn chilly but that was because of the wind out on the trip around and on the Statue of Liberty.
We had 1 day of a slight snow flurry which was magical.
The weather is never guaranteed, however, we were told it could get pretty bad there.
Our view from the Empire State building was clear as a bell, however, our friends who were there last week couldnt see a thing from the top because of the mist.
Whatever you chose NY is amazing and christmas makes it even more special. Maceys is open until midnight and I would suggest going there later as it will get very packed.
I think 2 weeks there would be too much too. Split the days and go off somewhere else.Life is a rollercoaster.....ya just gotta ride it:whistle:0 -
Thanks for all the advice, lots to think about...may have to resort to having the beach holiday then and going to NYC later in the year!0
