Drop down lists in OO Calc

I've worked out how to do drop down lists now in Calc but can't find anywhere in the help menus that will tell me how someone could find an entry in the drop down list by typing the first initial of the word.
What I want to do is record the vouchers we give out, so have basic coloums with the number of the voucher, who it's for, the value of it and how it was paid for. So my drop down list for payment type would have for example, cash, credit card, debit card, bank transfer, cheque. I want to make it so that if you type the letter 'd' then debit card will come up and so on. Or any other way to avoid having to click on the down arrow on the right first.
The other thing is that in the column of cells that has the drop down list, the actual cell is empty, it's not until you click on the arrow that you see anything. What is supposed to go in that empty cell, and how do I do it? The actual column title is payment type so I don't need to put that. Or do I have to repeat it?
Sorry for all the questions!
