help with routers =)

hi guys up untill the weekend i was running a belkin wireless G router
this 1 http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=belkin+wireless+g+router+f5d7230&hl=en&biw=1916&bih=874&prmd=sv&cr=countryUK%7CcountryGB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=15178994291191733085&ei=0dC9TPvFNMWWOvq4xR4&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDcQ8wIwAg#

it would cope no problems with wife on laptop and me on my pc(desktop) or ps3 the only prob we had is that the inernet on the laptop would just disconnect frequently so we would have to unplug it wait then plug it in again, so the weekend i replaced it with a cheap (£12) bought on hduk tendawireless N router.. this 1 http://www.tenda.cn/product/show.php?productid-354.html

and now the internet seems to be like dial up, no probs disconnecting but on my wifes laptop especially is terrible i would even say that ive noticed it on the desktop and am thinking of swapping them back =(

have i done something wrong or is the tenda not man enough for the job and what router should i be looking for to upgrade

thx guys.. i hope someone can help

Hmmm. You've gone from one I'd never ever buy every again (Belkin) to one I would never ever contemplate buying in the first place.

Tomorrow, get yourself to PC World or wherever and buy a NETGEAR. When you get home, download InSSIDER on the laptop and run it. It'll scan the local area and tell you what it can pick up and most importantly, what channel the networks are on. Alter the channel on your shiny new NETGEAR router to an empty one or the same as one with the weakest signal.

I cant comment on tenda as a make for router as not used them but i can say that netgear are good and from experience are easy to setup, they're just plug in and go

I agree with the above statements. Netgear do some good routers for home use. D-Link and Linksys also have good options but it's been a while since I looked at prices and functionality differences.

One thing to keep in mind is security. Make sure the router supports the same encryption as your devices. Some older network cards don't support the latest encryption methods. Also be aware of the security problems with WEP.

I've had Netgear and Belkin routers. I've also set lots up for friends and I think the Belkin bashing is unfair. There all much of a muchness (I'm currently connected via a Belkin that's two years old and going stro
