Feel a mess - skin, hair etc......

Hi CityGirl
I think you should look into a shampoo that is SLS free (second listed ingredient in Simple Shampoo), these are industrial detergents and will strip your hair and scalp of the natural oils and also you hair colour. I too colour my hair and have dry ends but greasy roots, if I use a shampoo with SLS in it, it strips my scalp which will then work overtime to compensate for the oil that has been stripped resulting in more greasy roots. SLS also makes my scalp itch like crazy.
I also think you would benefit from the oil cleansing method, you are basically cleansing with oils which will make your skin feel very hydrated and clean but not stripped. I use OCM and it does feel strange to begin with but I persevered with it and my skin has never been better - and my skin is oily. I think the wipes are fairly harsh on your skin too.
Why not think about mineral makeup rather than a liquid?
I think we've all had days where we have not felt our best so we are with you on this one. It is trial and error with products and some of them can be expensive, try and get samples/travel sizes before splashing out on something that may not work.
Good Luck0 -
Hi all, thanks for your replies. Maman, I have started to despair of foundation since the Clinique gentle light has been discontinued for the second time. I have just bought a No7 powder that I used to use years ago called Creme Touch, it has a bit of colour in it but stops my face from sweating and shining and it takes a minute to apply. At first I thought it didn't work aswell as the Clinique but now I feel it does and my friend at lunchtime said it looks OK on me.
I know that cleansing wipes are supposed to be harsh but the Simple ones have no alcohol in them and are rated at the best selling cleanser in the UK. I find them quite gentle really as long as I moisturise my face afterwards.
I have tried a non SLS shampoo from the Body Shop, one of the new ones that have been launched recently and it made my hair very dull and flat. Maybe I need to shop around more.0 -
I'm also a convert. I've been using them for about 2 year now and my skin has never been so good. I used to love the Intense Line Defense but it seems to be discontinued now.
Where do you get your products from? I've been using a supplier in Northern Ireland but I'm keen to try and save a few £££.
selfridges in london. they also sell them in a few spas but they are all a similiar price.0 -
Thanks for the advice citygirl, glad your friend complimented you. It does wonders for self esteem.0

Hope you don't mind me asking a question. I've found that I look too 'made up' when I use foundation so I don't bother. I just have a 'natural' look with some mascara and lipstick. I'm fine through the summer with a tanned face but about this time of the year I start to look washed out and grey and I so admire people looking effortlessly made up. Maybe I'm buying the wrong product or applying it badly. If any of you were starting to use make up for the first time, where would you start? I can afford to treat myself but I don't want to buy expensive mistakes if I can avoid it.
I used to have this problem, but find as my skin gets worse now I'm off my pill, I am back to using foundation. I found it was all in the application.
I use a make up sponge to apply my foundation every day, which keeps it light and even and doesn't leave any excess on your face. That with a dusting of powder tends to keep the oiliness at bay and my skin looking almost good each day.
You do have to try different foundations as well... practice makes perfect...MFW 2010- £112,500 + 20% Equity Loan = £150,000 35 years
2013- £108,877.28 + 20% / current OP = 19 years :T

A good powder to stop the shine is mineral veil by bare escentials (sp), its quite expensive, but you can get it off ebay a bit cheaper.0

First of all stop all Clinique use. They use a lot of fancy words that make it sound good. The reality? It contains so much alcohol people have done experiments with removing nail varnish, cleaning leather sofas and various other tests. As your skin is going through a tough time currently all Clinique toners/exfoliators will be doing is stripping the skin of it's natural oils thus making the skin produce even more oil that you don't need! Estee Lauder are nice on the skin but are very pricey. So try No7 Soft & Soothed cleanser and toner (the pink ones). Use an eye cream at night as well as a specified night cream (No7 also do both - only mentioning because they have £5 vouchers on currently). If you are suffering with oily skin during the day try using a mattifying day cream Vichy do one, as do La Roche Posay. LRP are the best in the business and they aren't overly expensive as they do work. All the SLS business can be nonsense, only a few small people react it's just become a popular thing 'oh yes lets all ditch SLS, parabens etc etc'. So people jump on the bandwagon a bit like they did years ago with organic food! For the hair, stay away from Tresemme as these contain silicone which will make your hair greasy and strip them of their colour. I recommend herbal essences.0

As for make-up, you are saying with foundation you feel a bit 'done up'. I highly suggest looking at mineral foundation! I personally don't like it myself because it doesn't give me enough coverage. But if you want light-barely medium then it is worth a look. Bare Minerals is of course the 'top' brand but L'oreal do it and so do No7.0

Never underestimate blushers, they're brilliant if you want a bit of colour but don't want to look like a doll. I have the no7 one usually in a light-ish pink and it seems to suit me - I'm quite pale in the winter but go brown quickly in the summer.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

Hi, I know most of the Clinique toners (apart from the mild one) are harsh but I don't use the toner. I use the comforting cream cleanser sometimes which is very soothing and Clinique make up.
I often fancy Herbal Essences but am wondering if it may be too scented for my scalp. The Simple shampoos are fine but there isn't as much variety.
My hairdresser did say about using a spray conditioner but sometimes I find those a faff and can comb my hair better with the rinse out type. I think serum would smooth my hair down and tame it a little but I don't want it to make the grease worse, unless you can get a lighter one.0
