Two Banks Claiming Same Balance!!!

Help
. I tried to make a balance transfer between Halifax to Barclays a couple of month ago. I've been paying the Barclays account for the past couple of months. I came home from uni to find a letter from Halifax saying I hadnt paid for the past couple of months, I phoned them they said the balanced transfer had been unsucessful and Barclays had returned the balance. i then phoned Barclays (call centre in India) who after much fuss confirmed this and said they would put it right.
Today (three weeks later) I phoned up to see if Barclays had rectified the situation and transferred my money and they (after two hours of being passed around the call centre) said i still owed them the money and the balance transfer had gone through. Now two banks are claiming the same balance Im accruing interest and bad credit rating because of one of their mistakes. Im so stuck as both are claiming the transfer was succesful/unsucessful. Help!

What do your statements show - either paper or online version?0

Halifax statements show that the transfer didnt happen. Barclays statements show that it did happen ie: they were one month reuqesting the same amount as Halifax were. They're both claiming a different thing, now the interest on two accounts is growing and none of this is my fault!0 -
Looks like you'll need to go down both bank's complaints process - exhaust that and then ifi not go to FOS.
You need them to rectify the whole situation (returning interest, and any charges), as well as ensure your credit file is clean and most likely ask for a bit of compensation on top, why not
hth,

I'm afraid you'll have to follow both complaints processes - that's what they're there for. If the result is something you're not satisfied with, you can then take it to the FOS for further help.

I don't know who to pay in the meantime. I cant afford to pay both.
You shouldn't hide quietly, give them both a call and explain the situation, say you can not afford to pay for this mistake (not yours) and it needs to be resolved and that if the only way to resolve it is to follow both complaints processes, then do so.
Don't be shirty with either of them, be nice and ask for their help - esp as you don't know which one is the bank that made the error.

I agree with Pippity Pip - write to both of them (recorded delivery of course) using their complaints process, explaining what's happened and making it clear that you will expect whichever bank is in the wrong to pay for any costs and charges incurred. That way they should both be aware that you are disputing the amount owed to at least one of them which should be enough to give you breathing space while you wait for this to be resolved. Unfortunately there's not much you can really do over the phone from the sounds of things, so although it's not normally good practice to wait for things to sort themselves out, but in this case I don't think you have any other options.0
